Chapter 6 - Reclaiming the Empire

On Monday morning, precisely at 8:30 AM, a fleet of black sedans pulled up to the glass-and-steel skyscraper bearing the name VANCE CONSTRUCTION.

I stepped out onto the granite plaza wearing a tailored burgundy power suit and dark sunglasses. Beside me was Evelyn, backed by a team of six senior forensic accountants and corporate legal advisors.

For eight years, Daniel had walked through these doors pretending to be the sole king of this domain. Today, the real owner was taking her crown back.

As we entered the grand marble lobby, every single employee stopped dead in their tracks.

Whispers rippled through the open floor plan. Security guards snapped to attention. The large digital screen in the reception area—which used to feature Daniel’s glossy corporate portrait—now displayed a simple, stark message from the Board of Directors:

EMERGENCY GENERAL MEETING AT 9:00 AM — AUDITORIUM

We rode the private executive elevator directly to the top floor. The corner office was massive, featuring floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the whole city.

On the mahogany desk sat a framed photo of Daniel and Vanessa at a charity gala in Miami.

I walked over, picked up the frame, and dropped it into the leather trash can beside the desk.

"Clean this room out," I instructed the facilities manager waiting at the door. "Every piece of furniture Daniel picked out. Replace it by tomorrow."

"Yes, Mrs. Vance—I mean, Ms. Vance," the manager stammered, nodding frantically.

The Boardroom TakeoverAt 9:00 AM, I walked into the board auditorium.

The room was packed with forty senior executives, project managers, and shareholders. The atmosphere was thick with anxiety. Rumors had been swirling all weekend that the firm would declare bankruptcy following Daniel’s arrest and the FBI raid.

I walked straight to the podium at the front of the room, looking over the crowd with calm, unwavering confidence.

"Good morning," I said, my voice projecting clearly without the mic. "For those of you who don't know me, my name is Claire Vance. As of 8:00 AM today, by court order and unanimous board resolution, I have assumed the role of Chairwoman and CEO of this company."

A nervous hush settled over the room.

"I know what you're thinking," I continued, resting my hands on the edges of the podium. "You’re wondering if your jobs are safe. You’re wondering if this company is going under because the former CEO embezzled six million dollars and was dragged away by federal agents."

I paused, letting the weight of my words hit them.

"I am here to tell you that Vance Construction is not going down. In fact, for the first time in nine years, this company is going to be run with total transparency, integrity, and real competence."

I clicked a remote, illuminating the massive presentation screen behind me.

"Over the weekend, my team and I restructured our debt obligations," I explained, bringing up clean, balanced financial charts. "We have secured a twenty-million-dollar private liquidity line from Hayes Financial Group. All active construction sites will resume work at noon today. Every contractor, vendor, and worker will be paid in full on Friday."

Gasps filled the room, quickly replaced by visible sighs of relief.

Richard Hayes stood up from his front-row seat and began clapping slowly. Within three seconds, the entire auditorium erupted into standing applause.

They weren't just relieved—they were inspired. Daniel had led through intimidation and bluster. I was leading through cold, hard preparation.

As the crowd filed out, Richard walked up to me, extending his hand.

"Your father would be proud of you, Claire," he said warmly. "You handled this like a master class in corporate warfare."

"My father built this firm on honesty, Richard," I replied, shaking his hand firmly. "Daniel almost turned it into a money-laundering racket. I’m just restoring the family name."

"What about the high-rise project downtown?" Richard asked, his eyebrow raised. "Marcus Vale’s bribery scandal halted our zoning permits."

I smiled—a sharp, calculating smile.

"I have a meeting with the Mayor’s Ethics Committee at 2:00 PM," I said. "And unlike Daniel, I don't bring envelopes of kickback cash. I bring solutions."
