Chapter 8 - The War of the Parasites

Three days later, Room 302 of the Federal District Courthouse was converted into a battleground.
Because both Daniel Vance and Vanessa Cole were facing intertwined charges of wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy, the prosecution held a joint evidentiary hearing to review preliminary plea requests.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a tailored emerald-green coat. Beside me sat Evelyn and Richard Hayes.
To my left sat Daniel, escorted by two armed federal marshals. To my right sat Vanessa.
They were forced to sit at the same defense table, barely two feet apart.
For the past seventy-two hours, each had tried to sell out the other behind closed doors. Now, face to face, the tension between them was so volatile you could feel it humming in the air.
"Your Honor," Vanessa’s high-priced defense attorney began, standing up proudly. "My client, Ms. Vanessa Cole, was merely an employee following the direct orders of her superior, Mr. Daniel Vance. She was coerced under threat of termination into signing those vendor authorizations."
Daniel snorted loudly, shaking his head in disbelief.
"Coerced?" Daniel barked, turning to glare at Vanessa. "She begged me for those transfers! She gave her brother’s company account details herself! She took three hundred thousand dollars of that money and bought an apartment in Miami behind my back!"
"That is a complete lie!" Vanessa shrieked, slamming her cuffed wrists against the table. "You told me you were single! You told me your wife was an uneducated parasite who didn't know how to handle money! You manipulated me!"
"Silence in the court!" Judge Miller slammed her gavel down with a sharp crack that echoed off the high ceilings. "One more outburst from either defendant, and I will cite you both for contempt!"
The lead federal prosecutor, Agent Vance, stood up calmly, adjusting his tie.
"Your Honor, the government has reviewed the additional evidence voluntarily submitted by Mrs. Claire Vance," the prosecutor stated, holding up a sleek USB drive. "This drive contains forensic chat logs, offshore transaction records, and a handwritten note from Mr. Vance attempting to negotiate asset releases in exchange for hidden encryption keys."
Vanessa turned her head instantly, her eyes wide with fury as she stared at Daniel.
"You snitched on my offshore ledger?" she hissed at him under her breath.
"You tried to pin twenty years on me with the prosecutors yesterday, you psycho!" Daniel spat back.
"Mr. Vance," Judge Miller warned coldly. "The evidence provided clearly demonstrates that both defendants acted in active, mutual conspiracy to defraud Vance Construction and launder corporate funds. Furthermore, Mr. Vance’s attempt to conceal offshore encryption keys constitutes a direct violation of his sworn disclosure."
Judge Miller signed a document on her bench.
"Bail for both Daniel Vance and Vanessa Cole is hereby revoked. Both defendants will remain in federal custody until trial."
Vanessa broke down into hysterical sobs, sinking onto the table as her attorney tried in vain to comfort her.
Daniel sat frozen, staring at the floor as federal marshals stepped forward to cuff his hands behind his back.
As they turned Daniel around to lead him out through the side exit, his eyes met mine.

There was no anger left in his face. No pride. No arrogance. Only total, crushing defeat. He looked at me as if looking at a stranger—a powerful, invincible woman he had been foolish enough to mistake for a victim.
I didn't smile. I didn't gloat. I simply looked at him, gave a quiet, firm nod, and turned my back on him forever.
