Chapter 7 - The Desperate Deal

While I was rebuilding an empire, Daniel was rotting in a county holding facility while waiting for his public defender to file a reduced-bail motion.
Without his personal accounts, credit cards, or corporate perks, he had quickly discovered how cold the world was to a fallen man.
Inside the visitor room, Daniel sat behind a thick sheet of plexiglass, holding a black plastic phone receiver to his ear.
On the other side of the glass stood Ethan Cole—Vanessa’s brother.
Ethan looked terrified, his designer shirt wrinkled, sweat dripping down his temples.
"You have to get me out of this, Daniel!" Ethan panicked into the phone, his voice shaking violently. "The feds froze my bank accounts in Delaware! They served a search warrant at my house! They know I signed off on those shell transfers!"
"Shut up, Ethan!" Daniel hissed, pounding his fist against the glass. "You think I'm enjoying sitting in a concrete cell? Claire took everything! My shares, my house, my cars—she even took my fucking dog!"
"Vanessa is blaming you!" Ethan yelled back, ignoring Daniel’s rage. "She told her lawyer that you forced her into the kickback scheme! She’s trying to cut a deal with the state prosecutor right now to save her own skin!"
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
"She's doing what?"
"She told them you promised her a million dollars from the Cayman accounts to forge the vendor invoices!" Ethan revealed, leaning close to the glass. "Daniel, if she testifies against you, you're going to get twenty years!"
Daniel felt the walls closing in around him.
For months, he had thought he was the master puppeteer, pulling the strings between a naive wife and a seductive mistress. Now, he realized he was trapped in a cage surrounded by wolves—and his former mistress was about to bite his throat out.
"Listen to me, Ethan," Daniel whispered desperately, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the receiver. "Claire still has the original hard drives with the unedited audit logs. Those logs prove Vanessa was stealing money behind my back before I ever touched the Delaware accounts."
"So?" Ethan snapped. "Claire hates your guts! Why would she give you those logs?"
Daniel stared into space, a dark, manic look creeping into his eyes.
"She won't give them to me," Daniel muttered. "She’ll give them to the prosecution... if it guarantees she puts Vanessa away for longer than me."
The Unexpected VisitorThat night at 8:00 PM, I was sitting in my new living room, sipping tea while helping Noah with his math homework. The suburban house was warm, peaceful, and filled with the gentle hum of home.
My security detail tapped on the front door.
"Ms. Vance," the head of security said politely. "There’s a legal courier at the gate. He has an urgent hand-delivered letter from the county detention center."
I frowned, taking the sealed document.
I opened it. Inside was a hand-written note on rough legal pad paper, signed by Daniel.
Claire,
I know you despise me. I know I destroyed our marriage and lost your trust. But Vanessa manipulated both of us. She was stealing from my company long before I committed any crime. She planned to drain our accounts and abandon us both.
I have the access key to her private, hidden offshore ledger—the one she hid from her brother and the feds. I will give you the private encryption key to open it.
In exchange, I only ask for one thing: lower the bail hold on our joint emergency account so I can hire a real lawyer. Don't let her walk free while I take the entire fall.
Please, Claire. For what we used to have.
— Daniel
I stared at the letter, a low laugh bubbling up in my chest.
Even now, sitting in a jail cell, Daniel believed he could play me against Vanessa. He thought he was tossing me a bone to save himself.
I pulled out my phone and dialed Agent Vance at the FBI.
"Agent Vance," I said when he answered. "Daniel just sent me a handwritten note offering the private encryption key to Vanessa’s hidden offshore accounts."
"Did he?" Agent Vance asked, instantly alert. "Is he asking for a deal?"
"He wants me to release funds for his legal defense," I said with a cold chuckle. "Instead, I’m forwarding you a high-resolution scan of his letter. It contains his admission of knowledge regarding hidden offshore assets—which violates his preliminary asset disclosure under oath."

Agent Vance laughed out loud over the phone. "Ms. Vance, you are relentless. That handwritten note just added a perjury charge to his indictment."
"Let them tear each other apart, Agent Vance," I said softly, looking out at the calm, moonlit backyard. "I have a company to run."
