Chapter 1 - The Christmas Eve Lie

“There’s a right time for finding out your husband is cheating while you’re eight months pregnant?”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“I’m not sleeping with Celeste.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“Then tell me what she is.”
Silence.
That silence hurt worse than a confession.
Evelyn folded her arms over her stomach.
“Tell me.”
“I can’t.”
She laughed softly.
“Of course.”
“Evelyn—”
“No. You don’t get to say my name like I’m being unreasonable.”
“I didn’t say that.”
“You didn’t have to.”
She pointed toward his phone.
“She texts you after midnight. You come home smelling like her perfume. You missed two appointments because of her. And now she’s asking you not to leave her alone on Christmas Eve.”
Adrian looked toward the window.
Snow fell beyond the glass.
“I need you to trust me.”
Evelyn’s expression changed.
“Trust you?”
“Yes.”
“With what information?”
He looked back.
“I can’t tell you.”
“Then that isn’t trust, Adrian.”
Her voice cracked.
“That’s obedience.”
The word hit him.
Because deep down, he knew she was right.
“I’ll explain when I can.”
“When?”
“Soon.”
“Our daughter could be born any day.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
Her eyes filled.
“Because sometimes it feels like everyone in your life gets the truth except your wife.”
Adrian stepped toward her.
She stepped back.
That stopped him instantly.
Fear.
Not anger.
She had moved away from him as if his touch might hurt.
Adrian’s chest tightened.
“I would never betray you.”
“You already are.”
“I’m not sleeping with her.”
“Then tell me what you are doing.”
Again, silence.
Evelyn wiped one tear away.
“Go.”
“Evelyn.”
“She’s waiting.”
His jaw tightened.
“This isn’t what you think.”
“Then make me understand.”
He couldn’t.
Because Celeste Warren was not his mistress.
She was bait.
And the man they were trying to expose had already ordered Evelyn’s death once.
Adrian could not tell his wife that.
Not yet.
He had spent three months building a trap around the traitor inside his organization.
Three months lying.
Three months convincing Evelyn that Celeste was merely a consultant.
Three months allowing photographs to be taken of himself entering Celeste’s apartment.
Even his closest captains believed the affair.
That was the point.
Somewhere inside Adrian’s organization was a man selling information to Victor Carbone, the only rival powerful enough to challenge the Moretti family.
Victor believed Adrian had become distracted by another woman.
He believed Evelyn had become emotionally isolated.
He believed Adrian’s unborn daughter had become vulnerable.
Adrian wanted him to believe all of it.
What Adrian had never considered was what those same lies would do to Evelyn.
He picked up his coat.
“I’ll be back before midnight.”
She stared at him.
“No.”
“What?”
“Don’t promise me things anymore.”
His hand tightened around the coat.
“Evelyn—”
“Go.”
Adrian left.
At 11:38 p.m., Evelyn’s phone received a photograph.
No message.
No explanation.
Just a photograph.
Adrian stood inside Celeste’s penthouse.
Celeste’s arms were around his neck.
Her face was close to his.
His hand rested against her waist.
Evelyn stared until the image blurred.
Then another photograph arrived.
Celeste kissing Adrian’s cheek.
Another.
Adrian entering the bedroom hallway behind her.
Evelyn stopped breathing normally.
The baby shifted.
She sat down.
“Okay.”
Her voice sounded foreign.
“Okay, sweetheart.”
She placed both hands over her stomach.
“We’re okay.”
She wasn’t.
At midnight, the house staff toasted Christmas.
Evelyn remained upstairs.
At 12:14, she opened the closet.
At 12:27, she packed the hospital bag.
At 12:41, she removed the emergency cash she had quietly saved over the previous year.
Not because she planned to leave Adrian.
Because living with Adrian taught her that everyone should have an exit.
At 12:52, she opened the drawer containing her passport.
Gone.
Evelyn froze.
She checked again.
Nothing.
Then the safe.
Her secondary identification was missing too.
Her chest tightened.
Had Adrian removed them?
Was she actually free to leave?
She suddenly remembered every locked gate.
Every driver.
Every guard.
Every location tracker.
Every time Adrian said it was for protection.
The beautiful house became a cage.
Evelyn walked downstairs.
Marcus was near the security room.
He stood when he saw her coat.
“Mrs. Moretti?”
“I’m leaving.”
His expression changed.
“Where?”
“Not your business.”
“I need to notify Adrian.”
“No.”
“I’m required—”
“Marcus.”
She looked directly at him.
“Am I a prisoner?”
He went still.
“No.”
“Then open the gate.”
Marcus hesitated.
That hesitation answered too much.
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“Oh my God.”
“It’s not like that.”
“Then open it.”
Marcus looked toward the monitors.
Then back at the heavily pregnant woman standing before him.
He entered the security code.
The gate opened.
Evelyn walked out.
She did not take an SUV.
Did not take a driver.
She called a rideshare from a phone Adrian did not know she owned.
Before leaving, she placed her wedding ring beneath the Christmas tree.
At 4:52 a.m., Adrian returned.
At 4:54, he found the ring.
At 5:03, he ordered Marcus to find her.
And at 5:06, Marcus told him something that made the blood drain from his face.
“Her passport was removed from the safe yesterday.”
Adrian stared.
“By whom?”
Marcus looked toward the security logs.
“Your authorization code.”
“I didn’t take it.”
Silence.
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Show me.”
The access record was genuine.
His code.
His biometric override.
11:17 yesterday morning.
Adrian had been downtown at that time.
Marcus looked at him.
“Someone cloned your access.”
Adrian slowly turned toward the empty house.
The affair photographs.
The missing documents.
Evelyn leaving.
This had not happened by accident.
Someone had not merely discovered Adrian’s lie.
Someone had used it.
His phone rang.
Celeste.
He answered.
“What?”
Her voice shook.
“Adrian, we have a problem.”
“What happened?”
“The apartment was compromised.”
His blood went cold.
“How?”
“Someone photographed us.”
“I know.”
“How?”
“I don’t know.”
“Where’s Evelyn?”
Adrian looked at the wedding ring.
“Gone.”
Celeste stopped speaking.
Then:
“Oh God.”
Adrian’s voice became deadly quiet.
“What?”
“Victor never believed I was the target.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
May you like
Celeste whispered:
“He wanted Evelyn to run.”
