Chapter 8 - The Woman Adrian Could Not Command

Home became a rented townhouse near Lake Michigan.

Evelyn chose it.

Three bedrooms.

Small backyard.

No gatehouse.

No armed men inside.

Adrian hated the street parking.

Evelyn loved watching him hate it.

Noelle slept in a bassinet beside their bed.

Technically, Adrian slept in the guest room.

That had been Evelyn’s condition.

He accepted it without argument.

The first week was chaos.

Noelle cried at impossible hours.

Adrian attended meetings at seven in the morning after sleeping forty minutes.

Evelyn struggled with recovery.

They argued about bottle sterilizers.

Diapers.

Visitors.

Adrian’s mother.

Especially Adrian’s mother.

Victoria Moretti arrived without calling.

She entered carrying flowers and judgment.

“What is this place?”

Evelyn looked around.

“A house.”

“You left the estate for this?”

Adrian entered from the kitchen holding Noelle.

“Mother.”

Victoria stared at him.

“You look exhausted.”

“I have a newborn.”

“We had nurses.”

“We have nurses.”

Evelyn raised an eyebrow.

“During agreed hours.”

Victoria ignored her.

“Adrian, people are saying you handed documents to federal investigators.”

“I did.”

“Your grandfather built this family.”

“My grandfather built several felonies too.”

Victoria’s face whitened.

“Do not speak about him that way.”

“I’ll speak truthfully.”

She looked toward Evelyn.

“This is her influence.”

Old Adrian might have stayed silent.

Not now.

“No.”

Victoria turned.

“I made the decisions.”

“You never behaved this way before marrying her.”

Adrian handed Noelle gently to Evelyn.

Then faced his mother.

“Before marrying Evelyn, nobody expected me to become better.”

Victoria stared.

“You’re destroying your inheritance.”

“I’m cleaning it.”

“For her?”

“For my daughter.”

He looked at Evelyn.

“And for myself.”

Victoria left furious.

Evelyn watched the door close.

“That was attractive.”

Adrian looked surprised.

“Really?”

“Don’t ruin it.”

He smiled.

That evening, Celeste visited.

Evelyn opened the door.

For one awkward second, both women stared.

Celeste looked nothing like the fantasy Evelyn had created.

She looked tired.

Guilty.

Human.

“I owe you an apology.”

“Yes.”

Celeste blinked.

Evelyn stepped aside.

“Come in.”

They sat.

Adrian remained upstairs.

Celeste explained everything.

The staged photographs.

The perfume deliberately placed on Adrian’s collar because Dominic’s observers needed evidence.

The late-night messages designed to be intercepted.

Evelyn stared.

“You wrote, ‘Don’t make me spend tonight alone again.’”

Celeste winced.

“Yes.”

“That was cruel.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I might see it.”

“I was told you wouldn’t.”

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps deciding what I will and won’t know.”

Celeste looked ashamed.

“You’re right.”

“Did you kiss him?”

“On the cheek.”

“The photograph made it look different.”

“That was intentional.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Did he ever touch you romantically?”

“No.”

“Did he ever tell you he loved you?”

“No.”

“Did you want him to?”

Celeste froze.

Adrian, standing unseen at the top of the stairs, stopped.

Celeste answered slowly.

“No.”

Evelyn studied her.

“Not even once?”

Celeste smiled sadly.

“Your husband is terrifying, emotionally constipated, and impossible to schedule.”

Evelyn laughed unexpectedly.

“But no.”

Celeste continued.

“When Adrian talked about you, even while pretending the marriage was failing, he became a different person.”

Evelyn’s smile faded.

“That doesn’t excuse him.”

“I know.”

Celeste stood.

“I didn’t come to excuse him.”

She placed an envelope on the table.

“What’s this?”

“Evidence Dominic kept.”

Inside were transcripts.

Dominic had recorded conversations with Victor.

One passage was highlighted.

Carbone: Moretti’s weakness isn’t the wife.

Dominic: Then what is?

Carbone: He thinks she is.

Dominic: What does that mean?

Carbone: His weakness is the man he becomes when he thinks he’s protecting her.

Evelyn read it twice.

Victor had understood Adrian better than Adrian understood himself.

Adrian’s love was not the weakness.

His fear was.

Fear made him lie.

Control.

Threaten.

Hide.

And every time he acted from fear, his enemies knew exactly what he would do.

Evelyn closed the file.

That night, she knocked on the guest-room door.

Adrian opened it.

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

He looked confused.

“Can I come in?”

“Yes.”

She sat on the edge of the bed.

“Celeste told me everything.”

Adrian nodded.

“I heard some of it.”

“You were listening?”

“I was walking past.”

“Convenient.”

“Extremely.”

She looked at him.

“I believe you didn’t cheat.”

His eyes closed briefly.

Relief.

“But.”

He opened them.

“There it is.”

“You cheated me out of the right to understand my own marriage.”

He nodded.

“You made me think I was paranoid.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe another woman mattered more than me.”

“Yes.”

“And you did it because you were afraid.”

Adrian frowned.

“Afraid?”

“Victor understood you.”

She handed him the transcript.

He read it.

His expression changed.

Evelyn whispered:

“You don’t become dangerous when you hate someone.”

She touched his chest.

“You become dangerous when you’re terrified of losing someone.”

Adrian looked at her hand.

Then at her.

“How do I fix that?”

“You stop treating fear like permission.”

Silence.

Then Adrian whispered:

“I don’t know how.”

For once, he sounded like a man rather than an empire.

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“Then learn.”

She stood.

At the doorway, she stopped.

“Adrian?”

“Yes?”

“You can sleep in our room tonight.”

His face changed.

“Are you sure?”

“Don’t make me repeat myself.”

A slow smile appeared.

“Yes, ma’am.”

He followed.

But when they entered the bedroom, he did not reach for Evelyn.

He picked up Noelle.

Changed her diaper.

Then handed her back.

Evelyn smiled.

May you like

Trust did not return dramatically.

Sometimes it returned at 2:17 in the morning while two exhausted people argued over who forgot to warm the bottle.
