Chapter 7 - He Burned the Throne to Save the House

Adrian’s decision created panic.

Men who had made fortunes through Moretti influence suddenly discovered their protection was gone.

Contractors called.

Lawyers called.

Politicians called.

His mother called eleven times.

Adrian answered none of them.

He sat beside Noelle’s incubator.

Her fingers were smaller than the first joint of his thumb.

Machines surrounded her.

He hated every one.

Evelyn arrived in a wheelchair later that afternoon.

She stopped when she saw him.

Adrian had fallen asleep with one hand resting beside the incubator.

Noelle’s tiny fingers curled around his index finger.

Evelyn’s anger did not disappear.

But it changed shape.

She had spent years seeing Adrian as two men.

The gentle husband.

The frightening Moretti heir.

Now she understood the tragedy.

Adrian had spent his entire life believing the frightening man was necessary to protect the gentle one.

And the opposite had become true.

He woke.

“You should be resting.”

“So should you.”

“I’m fine.”

“You’re sleeping in a plastic chair.”

“It’s surprisingly terrible.”

She smiled.

He moved aside so she could reach Noelle.

Their daughter opened her eyes.

Evelyn cried.

Adrian looked away to give her privacy.

She noticed.

“You can cry too.”

“I’ve reached my annual quota.”

“Liar.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then Evelyn asked:

“What happens now?”

“With Dominic?”

“With us.”

Adrian looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

She seemed surprised.

He continued.

“I’m done deciding outcomes for you.”

“What do you want?”

“You.”

Her throat tightened.

“But wanting you doesn’t mean I get you.”

“No.”

“I want our daughter.”

“You’re her father.”

“I want our home.”

Evelyn looked down.

“I don’t want the old one.”

“Neither do I.”

That surprised her.

“I’m selling the estate.”

“What?”

“It has six security checkpoints and bullet-resistant windows.”

“Yes.”

“It’s a prison.”

“You loved that house.”

“I loved knowing nobody could reach you.”

His eyes moved toward Noelle.

“Then you ran from it.”

Evelyn touched the glass.

“I rented an apartment.”

“I know.”

“I never planned to leave.”

“I know.”

“I needed to know I could.”

Adrian swallowed.

“That may be worse.”

“Why?”

“Because my wife needed an escape route while still loving me.”

He looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

Evelyn nodded.

This time she believed he understood what he was apologizing for.

Outside the hospital, the Moretti empire began cracking.

Dominic cooperated after Victor abandoned him.

He provided evidence linking Carbone businesses to bribery, extortion, financial fraud, and threats.

Marcus turned over nine years of records.

Celeste testified.

Adrian did something nobody expected.

He voluntarily delivered his own files.

Every company.

Every questionable payment.

Every hidden partnership.

His lawyers nearly revolted.

“You could expose yourself criminally,” one warned.

Adrian looked at him.

“That’s generally what accountability does.”

Several businesses were placed into independent management.

Others were sold.

Some were investigated.

Adrian accepted the consequences.

When Evelyn learned, she confronted him.

“You could go to prison.”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t tell me.”

He froze.

Then almost laughed bitterly.

“You’re right.”

She crossed her arms.

“You don’t get to make another enormous decision affecting our daughter and call it personal.”

He nodded.

“You’re right.”

“Stop agreeing so quickly.”

“I’m trying.”

“Try discussing.”

So they did.

For three hours.

For perhaps the first time in their marriage, Adrian explained everything without deciding first what Evelyn could handle.

Some facts frightened her.

Some angered her.

Some changed how she saw him.

But truth did something lies never could.

It gave her a choice.

And after hearing everything, Evelyn said:

“Cooperate.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Even if it costs us?”

“It already cost us.”

She touched his hand.

“Now make sure Noelle doesn’t inherit the debt.”

Not financial debt.

Moral debt.

He understood.

Three days later, Noelle was strong enough to leave intensive care.

Adrian carried her down the hallway.

Evelyn walked slowly beside him.

Reporters waited outside.

“Mr. Moretti!”

“Are you cooperating with federal authorities?”

“Is the Moretti organization collapsing?”

“Mrs. Moretti, did you leave your husband because of an affair?”

Evelyn stopped.

Adrian looked at her.

“You don’t have to answer.”

“I know.”

She turned toward the cameras.

“My husband was not having an affair.”

Questions exploded.

She raised a hand.

“But he lied to me.”

Silence.

Adrian did not interrupt.

“He believed lying was necessary to protect me.”

She looked at him.

“He was wrong.”

Adrian nodded.

A reporter shouted:

“Are you staying married?”

Evelyn looked down at her bare ring finger.

Then at Noelle.

“We’re going home.”

The reporters leaned forward.

May you like

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“We haven’t decided what home means yet.”
