Chapter 4 - The Man Adrian Trusted Most

Evelyn replayed the video.
Marcus Hale.
Adrian’s security chief.
The man who had opened the gate when she left.
The man who had served Adrian for twelve years.
The man trusted with every security route, medical appointment, vehicle schedule, safe house, and emergency protocol.
Ruth watched beside her.
“Celeste suspected Marcus?”
“She says she couldn’t prove whether he was working with Dominic or tracking him.”
“That distinction matters.”
Evelyn nodded.
The video continued.
Celeste explained that Marcus had repeatedly accessed records shortly before Victor’s people appeared near Moretti operations.
But Marcus also quietly disrupted several attacks.
He looked guilty and loyal simultaneously.
“Adrian doesn’t know,” Celeste said. “I refused to accuse Marcus without proof because Adrian trusts him like a brother.”
The video ended.
Evelyn stared at the screen.
“We need to warn him.”
Ruth shook her head.
“Not directly.”
“Why?”
“If Marcus is compromised, he may control Adrian’s communications.”
Evelyn stood.
“I’m not letting my husband walk around beside someone who may be trying to kill him because I’m angry.”
Ruth studied her.
“You still love him.”
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“That’s what makes this so difficult.”
Back in Chicago, Adrian was already investigating Marcus.
Not because of Celeste.
Because of the gate.
“You let her leave.”
Marcus stared at him.
“Yes.”
“Without telling me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she asked whether she was a prisoner.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“And?”
“I realized I didn’t know what answer your security procedures were giving her.”
Adrian studied him.
“You disobeyed me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you were wrong.”
Silence.
Marcus had never spoken to him that way.
Adrian sat.
“Did you remove her passport?”
“No.”
“Did you know Dominic was following her?”
“No.”
“Have you ever given Victor information?”
Marcus looked him directly in the eyes.
“Yes.”
Adrian became perfectly still.
Marcus continued before he could react.
“For nine years.”
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“Explain.”
“My younger brother owes Victor money.”
“How much?”
“Originally? Three hundred thousand.”
“And now?”
“Doesn’t matter.”
“It matters to me.”
“Victor never wanted repayment.”
Adrian understood.
“He wanted you.”
Marcus nodded.
“I fed him information.”
Adrian rose.
Marcus did not move.
“What information?”
“Things I could control.”
“Meaning?”
“Warehouse schedules that changed afterward. Vehicle routes using empty cars. Meetings that never happened.”
“You were feeding him false intelligence.”
“Yes.”
“Without telling me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because if you knew, you would kill Victor.”
Adrian almost laughed.
“That remains an option.”
“And my brother would die first.”
Adrian looked away.
“Why didn’t you come to me?”
“Because your solution to fear is force.”
The words echoed Evelyn.
Control.
Force.
Protection.
Marcus continued.
“I thought I could manage it.”
“And Dominic?”
“I suspected him.”
“How long?”
“Eight months.”
Adrian grabbed him.
“Eight months?”
“I needed proof.”
“My wife was followed.”
“I know.”
“My unborn daughter was threatened.”
“I know.”
Adrian shoved him away.
“You should have told me.”
Marcus looked at him sadly.
“Yes.”
The hypocrisy struck Adrian immediately.
That was exactly what Evelyn had said to him.
You should have told me.
Everyone around Adrian Moretti kept secrets because they believed they alone could manage the danger.
He had built an empire in his own image.
And now it was collapsing for the same reason his marriage was.
Adrian released Marcus.
“Where is Dominic?”
“Gone.”
“Victor?”
“Gone.”
“Celeste?”
“Safe for now.”
Adrian paced.
Marcus hesitated.
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
“The threat against Evelyn’s mother was fake.”
Adrian stopped.
“How do you know?”
“The photograph was taken two weeks ago.”
“Why send it?”
“To force Evelyn deeper underground.”
“Why?”
Marcus looked grim.
“Because Victor doesn’t want her dead anymore.”
Adrian’s stomach tightened.
“What does he want?”
“Her baby.”
Silence.
Adrian’s expression became terrifying.
Marcus raised a hand.
“Listen before you react.”
“Why my daughter?”
“Because of the Moretti family trust.”
Adrian frowned.
“My legitimate businesses transfer controlling shares through direct descendants.”
“Yes.”
“That has nothing to do with Victor.”
“It does if Victor can prove you’re dead or legally incapacitated.”
Adrian stared.
Marcus continued.
“If something happens to you before the baby is born, Evelyn temporarily controls the family voting interest.”
“And after?”
“The child becomes beneficiary.”
Adrian understood.
“Victor wants leverage over Evelyn.”
“Yes.”
“To control my companies.”
“Yes.”
Adrian walked toward the window.
“So the affair photographs…”
“Were never primarily designed to destroy your marriage.”
Marcus shook his head.
“They were designed to make Evelyn leave your security perimeter voluntarily.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
He had created the weapon.
Victor merely fired it.
That night, Evelyn received another message.
No photograph this time.
An audio file.
Adrian’s voice.
“I don’t know where you are.”
She froze.
“I’m not going to ask.”
His breathing was audible.
“I know you’re safe because Father Bell told me.”
A pause.
“I also know saying I lied to protect you does not repair what I did.”
Evelyn covered her mouth.
“I made our home feel like somewhere you needed permission to leave.”
Her eyes filled.
“I made you believe you had to keep an apartment secret from me.”
She stopped breathing.
He knew.
“I found the lease.”
Another pause.
“I’m not angry.”
That broke her.
“I’m ashamed you thought you needed it.”
Evelyn began crying silently.
Then Adrian said:
“Do not come home.”
Her eyes opened.
“Victor’s plan is bigger than Celeste. Stay wherever you are.”
His voice hardened slightly.
“But if anyone approaches you claiming I sent them, ask them one question.”
Evelyn leaned closer.
“What did I say the first time you told me you were pregnant?”
She remembered instantly.
She had expected happiness.
Adrian had stared at the pregnancy test for almost a minute.
Then said:
I need a chair.
She had laughed for twenty minutes.
Nobody else knew.
Not Marcus.
Not his mother.
Not Celeste.
Only them.
The recording ended.
For the first time since leaving, Evelyn felt something other than betrayal.
She felt the faint outline of partnership.
Then the lights inside the Wisconsin house went out.
Ruth stood immediately.
“Stay here.”
A vehicle stopped outside.
Evelyn’s heart began pounding.
Someone knocked.
Three times.
Then a male voice called:
“Mrs. Moretti?”
Evelyn grabbed a kitchen knife.
“Adrian sent me.”
She looked at Ruth.
Ruth whispered:
“Ask.”
Evelyn approached the door but did not open it.
“What did Adrian say when I told him I was pregnant?”
Silence.
Then the man answered:
“He said it was the happiest day of his life.”
Evelyn’s blood turned cold.
Ruth reached for her phone.
Outside, another vehicle door opened.
Then another.
May you like
Evelyn backed away.
“They found us.”
