Chapter 11 - The Moretti Name Goes on Trial

Adrian expected consequences.

He did not expect them to arrive at 6:30 on a Tuesday morning.

Federal agents knocked.

Evelyn opened the door before Adrian could.

A prosecutor handed him documents.

Adrian read them.

Evelyn watched his face.

“What?”

He looked at her.

“They’re charging me.”

The investigation had uncovered financial violations tied to two companies Adrian controlled years earlier.

He had not personally ordered several illegal transactions.

But he had known enough to stop them.

He had not.

His attorneys immediately began building defenses.

Adrian stopped them.

“What exposure?”

“Potentially several years.”

Evelyn went pale.

“Several?”

The attorney nodded.

Adrian looked at Noelle playing on the floor.

His chest tightened.

He could fight.

Delay.

Use influence.

Attack credibility.

Old Adrian had a hundred ways.

Instead, he asked:

“What would cooperation look like?”

Evelyn stared.

Later, after the lawyers left, she confronted him.

“You don’t get to martyr yourself.”

“I’m not.”

“You have a daughter.”

“I know.”

“She needs you.”

“I know.”

“Then fight.”

He looked at her.

“For what?”

“For the truth.”

“The truth includes what I allowed.”

Evelyn’s anger faltered.

“I didn’t order everything.”

“No.”

“But men did things because they knew I wouldn’t ask questions.”

He sat.

“That is responsibility too.”

Evelyn began crying.

“I just got you back.”

Adrian’s face broke.

He pulled her close.

This time she allowed it.

“I know.”

“I’m angry.”

“I know.”

“I hate your family.”

“Reasonable.”

“I hate Celeste.”

“Less reasonable.”

“I don’t care.”

He laughed softly against her hair.

They negotiated a plea.

Adrian avoided the most serious charges by providing extensive cooperation against Carbone-linked operations and corrupt officials.

He received probation, financial penalties, community restrictions, and a temporary ban from executive control in several regulated businesses.

No prison.

When the judge asked whether he accepted responsibility, Adrian stood.

“Yes.”

Reporters filled the courtroom.

The Moretti name had finally entered daylight.

Outside, Evelyn waited holding Noelle.

Adrian walked toward them.

“Free man?” she asked.

“Legally supervised man.”

“Sounds good for you.”

He smiled.

Then reporters shouted questions.

“Mr. Moretti, has your empire fallen?”

Adrian stopped.

He looked at Evelyn.

Noelle.

Then toward the cameras.

“Yes.”

Everyone went silent.

“It needed to.”

He walked away.

That quote appeared everywhere.

But Adrian never read the articles.

He had somewhere more important to be.

Noelle had her six-month pediatric appointment.

And after missing two prenatal appointments for a fake affair, Adrian Moretti never missed another medical appointment for his daughter.

Not one.
