Chapter 2 - The Shadow File

The floorboards in the master bedroom didn't squeak, but Gabriel’s heart pounded like a diesel engine climbing a steep incline.

He sat on the edge of the bed, the dim morning light filtering through the blinds. On his knees lay the manila folder labeled with a single, cold word in Candice’s sharp handwriting: WIDOWS.

Gabriel opened it.

Inside were color photographs, bank statements, and obituary clippings. The first photograph was of a man named Arthur Vance, a retired civil engineer who had died three years ago in Cincinnati. Attached was a copy of Arthur’s death certificate—and a cashier's check stub payable to Candice for $220,000.

The second section contained files on Gabriel himself.

There were printouts of Gabriel’s life insurance policy—the $500,000 payout that would go to Candice if he died on the road—along with forged medical records indicating Gabriel suffered from severe, untreated depression. There was even a drafted, unsigned letter addressed to the state social services claiming Gabriel was mentally unfit to care for Lucas.

She wasn't just abusing Lucas. She was systematically isolating Gabriel, draining his hard-earned money, and setting the stage to declare him unfit—or worse—so she could claim his estate and life insurance.

Gabriel’s hands shook, not from fear, but from a quiet, white-hot fury. For thirty years, he had driven through icy mountain passes and blinding dust storms. He knew how to keep control when the road underneath him turned to ice.

He took out his smartphone, carefully photographed every single page, receipt, and bank card in the file, and then returned everything precisely to the drawer.

Downstairs, the kitchen smelled like warm cinnamon and oat pancakes. Lucas was sitting at the table, his arms folded tight against his ribs, staring nervously at the front door as if expecting Candice to burst through it.

Gabriel set a plate down in front of his son and sat across from him.

"Lucas," Gabriel said, keeping his voice as smooth as gravel. "Look at me."

The boy raised his eyes. They were sunken, shadowed with months of fear.

"Nobody is ever going to put a hand on you again," Gabriel declared softly. "Not Candice, not her family, not Wyatt. Do you hear me?"

"Dad... she told me if I said anything to you, she’d send me away to a state home," Lucas whispered, his voice trembling. "She said you were broke because of Mom's medical bills, and that she was doing us a favor."

Gabriel reached across the table and covered his son’s bruised hand. "She lied to you. Every word out of her mouth was a lie. I’m not broke. And you’re never leaving my side."

Gabriel took out his phone and made two calls. The first was to Marcus Vance, an old friend from his military days who now ran a high-end private investigative firm in downtown Columbus.

"Marcus," Gabriel said into the receiver. "I need you. Bring a team, bring security cameras, and bring an attorney. Today."
