Chapter 14 - Healing the Scars

Spring arrived in Ohio, bringing warm breezes and blooming cherry blossoms.
Gabriel made a life-changing decision: he stepped down from long-haul interstate trucking and bought a local logistics franchise, allowing him to be home every single night by five o'clock.
That summer, Gabriel parked his custom semi-truck in the driveway. He and Lucas packed two large duffel bags, loaded up the cab, and took off on a three-week cross-country road trip along Historic Route 66—a journey Clara had always dreamed of taking before she passed away.
They drove through the rolling hills of Missouri, the red canyons of Arizona, and down to the sunny shores of the Pacific Ocean in California.
Along the way, sitting in diner booths and camping under starlit desert skies, father and son talked about everything. They spoke of Clara’s memory with smiles instead of tears. Gabriel taught Lucas how to double-clutch a diesel engine, how to read weather maps, and how to stand tall against any storm life threw at him.
One evening, sitting by a campfire near the Grand Canyon, Lucas pulled Clara's silver cup from his backpack. The polished metal reflected the warm orange glow of the firelight.
"Dad?" Lucas asked quietly.
"Yeah, son?"
"I used to think I was weak because I let them do those things to me."

Gabriel turned to his son, his face serious and filled with love. "Lucas, look at me. Enduring cruel people doesn't make you weak. Surviving them makes you strong. But standing up after they drop you? That makes you unstoppable."
Lucas looked at the fire, taking in his father's words, and nodded slowly. The heavy weight that had rested on his chest for years finally lifted into the night sky like smoke.
