Chapter 12 - The Trial

Six months later, the Franklin County Courthouse was packed to capacity. Media outlets from across the Midwest lined the steps outside, eager to cover the verdict of the high-profile "Widow Syndicate" trial.

Inside Courtroom 4A, Judge Thomas presiding, Candice sat at the defense table wearing a dull orange prison jumpsuit. Gone was the expensive clothing, the styled hair, and the arrogant demeanor. She looked diminished, desperate, and defeated.

The prosecution called their key witness: sixteen-year-old Lucas Lawson.

Lucas walked down the center aisle of the courtroom with a steady stride. He wore a crisp white shirt and dark trousers. As he passed his father, Gabriel gave him a firm, reassuring nod.

Lucas took the stand, placed his hand on the Bible, and swore to tell the truth.

"Lucas," District Attorney Miller began gently, "can you tell the court what happened on the night of November 14th?"

For the next forty-five minutes, Lucas spoke. His voice didn't tremble. He described the cold water in the bucket, the refusal of meals, the humiliation at school, and the hiding of his late mother's silver cup.

He didn't speak with anger; he spoke with simple, absolute clarity.

"Did you ever ask your stepmother why she was treating you this way?" DA Miller asked.

"Yes," Lucas replied, looking directly into Candice’s eyes. "She told me I was a freeloader who didn't deserve to sit at the table. She said my mother was gone, my father was never coming back, and nobody cared about me."

"And what do you know now, Lucas?"

Lucas turned his gaze toward the back row, locking eyes with Gabriel.

"I know my dad came home," Lucas said, a small, genuine smile appearing on his face. "And I know he'll never let anyone hurt me again."

A silence settled over the courtroom. Even the defense attorney stared at his notepad, unable to formulate a single cross-examination question.

"No further questions, Your Honor," the DA said.
