Chapter 10 - The Reckoning at Dinner

News of Candice’s arrest sent shockwaves through her extended family, but the snake’s head was far from completely severed.

Three weeks later, Candice was released on high bail, funded secretly by her mother Evelyn’s offshore line of credit. Expecting Gabriel to back down before a public trial, Evelyn hosted an exclusive charity gala at the Grandview Country Club—an event designed to gather support from local politicians, judges, and high-society donors to paint Candice as a victim of a "cruel, vengeful husband."

The ballroom was filled with crystal chandeliers, velvet drapery, and over a hundred affluent guests. Candice sat at the head table wearing an elegant black dress, playing the part of a fragile, wrongfully accused woman.

"Thank you all for coming," Evelyn announced into the microphone from the stage. "My family has faced unprecedented slander from an ungrateful man who couldn't appreciate my daughter's sacrifice..."

BANG.

The heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.

Gabriel Lawson walked in. He wasn't wearing his trucker canvas jacket tonight. He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his posture regal and imposing. Beside him walked Marcus Vance, Sarah Jenkins, and two uniformed state investigators.

The chatter in the ballroom died instantly.

"Gabriel?" Candice gasped, standing up from her chair. "What is the meaning of this security breach?!"

Gabriel didn't answer her. He walked up to the side of the stage, took a wireless microphone from the podium technician, and looked out at the crowd of influential figures.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," Gabriel’s voice echoed powerfully through the room. "I apologize for the interruption, but I believe you are all here to support a cause. Before you write your checks tonight, there is some context you ought to see."

Marcus pressed a button on a remote control. The large presentation screens behind the head table, usually reserved for charity slideshows, flickered to life.

Instead of photos of Candice’s charity work, the screens displayed high-resolution scans of the "WIDOWS" folder: bank records showing transfers from Arthur Vance's account, pawn shop receipts for Clara’s wedding ring, medical reports detailing Lucas's injuries, and audio waveforms from the kitchen recordings.

Gasps echoed across the ballroom. Guests stood up in shock, pointing at the screens.

"That woman sitting right there," Gabriel pointed directly at Candice, "has built a career out of preying on grieving families. She abused my boy. She stole his mother's memory. And she tried to steal his future."

Evelyn rushed the stage, her face twisted in fury. "Turn those screens off! Security! Get this man out of here!"

"Security won't be helping you tonight, Mrs. Vance," State Investigator Miller said, stepping up onto the stage and displaying an arrest warrant signed by the District Attorney. "Candice Lawson, Evelyn Vance, and Rita Vance... you are all under arrest for racketeering, grand larceny, child endangerment, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud."

The ballroom descended into utter chaos. High-society guests rushed for the exits as state troopers moved in, surrounding the head table.

Candice looked at Gabriel, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror as the steel cuffs clicked around her wrists once again—this time in front of every person whose respect she had spent years trying to buy.

Gabriel lowered the microphone, adjusted his cuffs, and turned his back on them without another word.
