Chapter 4
The police arrived an hour later.
They took statements from everyone.
They watched the footage again and again.
When they asked if I wanted to press charges, I hesitated.
Vanessa sat in the corner, looking small and broken.
I thought of my mother.
Of my brothers.
Of how easy it would be to let the law punish her.
But I also thought of what had driven her to this.
Loneliness. Fear of not being good enough.
“Emily?” Daniel asked gently.
“What do you want to do?”
I looked at Vanessa.
“I don’t want her in jail,” I said slowly.
“But I want her to understand exactly what she almost destroyed.”
The officer nodded.
“We can file a formal warning. And she will have to pay for any harm done.”
Vanessa stood up, her legs unsteady.
“I will pay for everything. Your mother’s medicine. Your brothers’ school fees. All of it.”
I shook my head.
“I don’t want your money. I want your honesty. I want you to stop comparing yourself to me.”
Vanessa stared at me in shock.
“You… you forgive me?”
“Not yet,” I said.
“But I am willing to try.”
Margaret walked over to me.
Tears glistened in her eyes.
“Emily, I am so sorry. We failed you both.”

“From today on, you are not just our housekeeper. You are part of this family.”
