Chapter 9

In the months that followed, our lives changed in ways I never imagined.
Vanessa set up a foundation to help low-income families with medical costs.
I became her right hand.
We visited hospitals and schools together.
We spoke to people about kindness and second chances.
My mother’s health improved day by day.
My brothers got the education they deserved.
I never had to worry about money again.
But more than that… I had a family.
A real family.
Not by blood, but by choice.
One evening, we sat on the porch watching the sun go down.
Vanessa turned to me.
“Do you ever think about that day?”
“Sometimes,” I said honestly.
“It still hurts. But it also reminds me how far we’ve come.”
“I will never stop saying sorry,” she said quietly.
“And I will never stop being grateful that you gave me a chance.”
I leaned my head on her shoulder.
“We gave each other a chance.”
Margaret and Daniel joined us.
No words were needed.

We just sat there together.
Safe. Loved. Whole.
