Chapter 7

A month later, the annual charity ball was held at the mansion.
Usually, I stayed in the background.
Serving drinks. Clearing plates.
But tonight was different.
Vanessa came to my room before the event.
She held a beautiful dress in her arms.
“Wear this,” she said.
“I can’t,” I said.
“It’s not proper.”
“Proper be damned,” she said firmly.
“You are not just staff tonight. You are our guest. Our friend.”
She helped me get ready.
Fixed my hair. Lent me simple earrings.
When I walked down the stairs, everyone stopped talking.
I felt self-conscious.
But then I saw Daniel and Margaret smiling proudly.
Vanessa took my arm and led me to the center of the room.
“Everyone,” she said clearly.
“I owe this woman my deepest apology. And my greatest gratitude.”
She told them everything.
The lie. The slap. The truth that came out.
How I’d chosen mercy over anger.
When she finished, the room was silent.
Then one person clapped.
Then another.
Soon the whole room was applauding.

Tears filled my eyes.
For the first time in my life, I felt truly seen.
