Chapter 6

Over the next few weeks, things changed slowly but surely.

Vanessa stopped snapping at everyone.

She started helping me with chores.

She listened when I told her about my life.

I listened when she told me about hers.

How she’d always felt like she was competing with a ghost.

How she thought no one would ever love her for who she was.

“You are not competing with me,” I told her one evening.

“We are two different people. With different strengths.”

Vanessa smiled, a real genuine smile.

“Maybe… maybe we could be friends?”

I smiled back.

“I’d like that very much.”

Margaret and Daniel watched us with relief.

They’d been so afraid this would tear us all apart.

Instead, it was bringing us closer.

One afternoon, Daniel called us all into the study.

He placed the diamond necklace on the desk.

“I had this remade,” he said.

He held it out to me.

The stones were arranged differently now.

More delicate. Just as beautiful.

“It was meant to be a gift for Margaret,” he said.

“But now it belongs to you. As an apology. And as a symbol of trust.”

I shook my head.

“It’s too much.”

May you like

“It is exactly what you deserve,” Margaret said softly.

“For your loyalty. For your kindness. For forgiving when you had every right to hate.”
