Chapter 4 - The Midnight VIP

The VIP wing of Northwestern Memorial Hospital was bathed in low, soothing light.

Claire lay in the private suite, the soft beep of the heart monitor providing a rhythmic, comforting backdrop. Her fingers were heavily bandaged, but the ultrasound monitor beside her bed displayed a sight that made every drop of pain worth it:

A steady, powerful heartbeat.

"The baby is perfectly healthy, Mrs. Mercer," Dr. Aris Thorne said, adjusting her glasses with a warm smile. "No sign of placental abruption. Your son is a fighter."

Claire rested her hand on her bump, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes. "Thank you, Dr. Thorne."

"You should thank your legal team," Dr. Thorne added, her tone turning serious. "Twenty minutes before you arrived, a local doctor named Dr. Kenneth Miller attempted to file an emergency order to have you sedated under 'maternal psychiatric risk.' He claimed he had authorization from your husband."

Claire’s eyes went cold. Dr. Miller. He was Grant’s golf buddy—a dirty physician willing to sign off on false diagnoses for a fat check.

"What happened to him?" Claire asked.

"Arthur Vance happened," Dr. Thorne chuckled softly. "Mr. Vance had the state medical board suspend Dr. Miller's license provisionally before he even reached the hospital lobby. The man left in tears."

A soft tap sounded at the heavy oak doors of the suite.

Arthur Vance stepped inside, holding a sleek silver tablet. Behind him was a young woman in a sharp navy blazer—Maya Lin, the top digital forensics strategist in the country.

"How is our young heir?" Arthur asked warmly.

"He's strong, Arthur. We both are," Claire replied, sitting up slightly. "Tell me what's happening outside."

Maya stepped forward, tapping the screen of her tablet and projecting a live dashboard onto the wall monitor.

"Mrs. Mercer, calling it a viral storm would be an understatement," Maya reported. "The video of Sloane Avery stepping on your hand, combined with the recording of Grant’s threats, has hit eighty-two million views across major social media platforms in under four hours."

On the screen, news tickers from major financial outlets flashed in vivid red:

"Grant tried to post bail an hour ago," Arthur chimed in, leaning on his silver-topped cane. "Unfortunately for him, every judge in Cook County watched the livestream. The magistrate denied bail, citing him as an extreme flight risk due to his attempted private jet flight to Switzerland."

Claire felt a quiet, icy satisfaction settle over her. "What about the Mercer estate?"

"That’s where things get interesting," Maya said, pressing another button on her tablet. "When Grant locked you out of the Lake Forest mansion and changed the gate codes, he triggered a clause in your father’s original prenuptial agreement."

Claire looked up, surprised. "My father’s clause?"

"Your father knew Grant was an ambitious opportunist from the day you brought him home," Arthur explained smoothly. "He inserted a secret, self-executing default trust clause. If Grant ever attempted to unilaterally restrict your access to marital properties or file bad-faith legal actions against your sanity..."

Arthur paused, a predatory smile crossing his face.

"...the entire Mercer enterprise, including his personal equity, automatically reverts to your private trust as full compensation for bad-faith breach of contract."

Claire took a deep breath. "Meaning..."

"Meaning Grant doesn't just own nothing," Maya finished. "He owes your trust twenty-eight million dollars in accrued debt. You own his company. You own his house. You even own the car he drove to the hotel tonight."

Before Claire could respond, the security phone on the wall chimed.

Arthur answered it, listened for a moment, and lowered the receiver.

"Claire," Arthur said quietly. "Grant’s mother, Eleanor Mercer, is in the waiting room. She’s demanding to see you."

May you like

Claire’s brow furrowed. Eleanor Mercer was the grand matriarch of Chicago high society—a woman who had treated Claire like a low-class intruder for six years, constantly reminding her that she was "lucky" to be married to her golden boy.

"Let her in," Claire said coldly. "It’s time we cleared the air."
