Chapter 5 - The Wrath of the Matriarch

The door burst open, and Eleanor Mercer swept into the room like a storm of mink fur and diamonds.
At sixty-eight, Eleanor maintained a terrifying presence in the city, her face drawn tight by expensive surgeries and perpetual arrogance. But tonight, her immaculate facade was cracking. Her eyes were red, and her trembling hands clutched a crocodile-skin handbag.
"You scheming, venomous little creature!" Eleanor hissed, rushing toward the bed.
Arthur Vance stepped smoothly into her path, his tall frame blocking her completely. "One more step, Mrs. Mercer, and I will have security remove you for trespassing."
Eleanor glared at Arthur, then looked over his shoulder at Claire, who sat calmly in her hospital bed, untouched and composed.
"Look what you've done to my son!" Eleanor shrieked. "Grant is in a holding cell! He is sitting on a steel bench with criminals! His company is destroyed! His name is ruined on the news!"
"Grant did that to himself, Eleanor," Claire said, her voice dropping into a register of sheer, unwavering authority. "He stole from my trust. He paid off a corrupt doctor to declare me insane. And he stood by while his mistress drove her heel into my hand."
"Sloane is a foolish girl who made a mistake!" Eleanor argued passionately. "And Grant was under severe stress! You are his wife! You are supposed to protect him, not parade our family's dirty laundry in front of the entire world!"
Claire couldn't help but laugh—a short, dark sound that stunned Eleanor into silence.
"Protect him?" Claire asked. "Where was his protection when I was lying on the cold pavement in the rain? Where was his concern for your unborn grandson?"
Eleanor flushed, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
"You think you’ve won, don't you?" Eleanor snarled, dropping her soft tone entirely. "You think because you have a few powerful old men backing you, you can destroy the Mercer name? I built this legacy long before Grant was born. My family has political connections that reach straight to the state supreme court!"
"Oh, you mean Judge Harrison?" Claire asked mildly, leaning back against her pillows.
Eleanor froze. "What?"
Claire gestured to Maya, who pulled up a document on the screen.
"Judge Harrison was forced to recuse himself twenty minutes ago, Eleanor," Claire revealed smoothly. "Because while Grant was busy hiding stolen money in Sloane’s shell company, he also left a paper trail showing offshore offshore payments to Judge Harrison’s offshore account to secure favorable rulings for your family's real estate firm."
Eleanor’s face drained of every drop of color. She staggered back a step, catching herself on the edge of a chair.
"You... you pulled his financial records?" Eleanor whispered in horror.
"I didn't just pull them," Claire said. "I sent them to the Department of Justice."
The room fell into a suffocating silence.
Eleanor looked at Claire as if seeing her for the first time. The quiet, gentle girl who had meekly nodded through six years of snide comments at family dinners was completely gone. In her place sat a ruthlessly intelligent strategist who had systematically dismantled an empire in a single evening.
"You're a monster," Eleanor breathed, her voice shaking with genuine fear.
"No," Claire replied softly, looking Eleanor dead in the eye. "I'm a mother protecting her child from a family of parasites."
Claire waved her hand dismissively toward the door.
"Arthur, please have Mrs. Mercer escorted out. The smell of her perfume is making me nauseous."
Two uniformed hospital security guards stepped into the doorway.
"Mrs. Mercer, please come with us," the lead guard said firmly.
Eleanor backed away slowly, her eyes wide with terror, realization finally settling in that her family’s era of untouchable power was over forever. She turned and practically fled down the hallway, the sound of her heels echoing pathetically against the marble floors.
Arthur turned back to Claire, admiration shining in his eyes.
"That was magnificent, my dear," Arthur said. "Your father would have been incredibly proud."
"It's not over yet, Arthur," Claire said, reaching for her phone on the nightstand. "Grant still thinks he has one card left to play."
"What card?" Arthur asked, brow furrowed.
Claire unlocked her phone screen, showing an incoming text message from an unknown number sent just three minutes ago from inside the detention facility.
Unknown: I know about the key in your father's safe deposit box, Claire. You haven't won yet. If I go down, I'm taking your father's entire legacy with me.
May you like
Claire stared at the message, her eyes narrowing into cold, sharp steel.
"Set up a meeting at the detention center tomorrow morning," Claire instructed Arthur. "I want to look him in the eyes when I strip away his final delusion."
