Chapter 6 - The Glass Cage

The visitor room at the Cook County Detention Center smelled of industrial floor cleaner and stale coffee.

Grant Mercer sat behind the thick reinforced glass, his hands bound by heavy steel handcuffs. The pristine tuxedo was gone, replaced by a coarse, orange jumpsuit that looked three sizes too big for him. Dark circles bruised the undersides of his eyes, and his styled hair was now unwashed and wild.

When the heavy steel door opened and Claire walked in, Grant leaned forward so hard against the metal counter that his chains rattled violently.

Claire moved with slow, elegant grace. She wore a tailored cream coat that draped softly over her pregnant bump. Behind her stood two private security guards and Arthur Vance.

Claire sat down on the metal stool and picked up the black plastic phone receiver.

Grant snatched his receiver off the hook immediately.

"You came," Grant rasped, his voice raw. "I knew you’d come. You can't just destroy my life, Claire! You can't leave me in here!"

Claire looked at him with cool, detached detachment. "You sent me a text message threatening my father’s legacy, Grant. I came to see if you had any sanity left, or if prison had broken you completely in twelve hours."

Grant let out a bitter, manic laugh.

"You think you’re so smart, don't you?" Grant whispered, pressing his face closer to the scratched glass. "You got the banking board, you got the news media, you even got my own mother running scared. But you forgot one tiny detail, Claire."

"Did I?" Claire asked, her tone entirely unbothered.

"The Mercer-Vance Energy Patent," Grant smirked, a flicker of his old arrogance flaring up. "The original green energy technology your father spent fifteen years developing before he died. He entrusted the primary master key code to a private vault in Zurich. And guess whose name is on the joint access signature?"

Claire remained silent, staring at him.

"Mine!" Grant spat victoriously. "Your father put my name on that offshore access contract the day we got married! Without my biometric scan and my physical signature in Zurich, you can never unlock your father’s life work. You can never commercialize it. The entire foundation of your trust is completely frozen until I say so!"

Grant leaned back, a triumphant, ugly grin spreading across his face.

"So here's the deal, Claire," Grant sneered. "You drop the criminal assault charges against me and Sloane. You sign an agreement restoring my corporate equity and returning my assets. Do that, and I’ll sign the Zurich release. Refuse... and your father’s greatest legacy dies in a Swiss bank vault forever."

Claire looked at him for five long seconds.

Then, slowly, her lips curved into a quiet, breathtaking smile.

It wasn't a smile of anger. It was a smile of pure, devastating pity.

"What's so funny?!" Grant demanded, slamming his hand against the glass. "I hold the key, Claire! I hold the power!"

Claire lifted her receiver slightly closer to her lips.

"Grant," Claire said softly. "Did you ever wonder why my father let you put your name on that Zurich contract five years ago?"

Grant’s smile faltered. "What?"

"My father was a genius, Grant. But more than that, he was a master of human character," Claire explained smoothly. "He knew you were obsessed with titles, prestige, and quick money. He knew that if he gave you a fake sense of control, you would focus all your attention on that one vault and completely ignore everything else."

Grant’s face pale. "Fake sense of control? What are you talking about? I signed the Swiss bank documents!"

"You signed a decoy access agreement, Grant," Claire revealed, her voice dripping with calm authority. "The Zurich vault doesn't hold the original energy patents."

Grant stared at her, his jaw slowly dropping. "You're lying..."

"The master patents were transferred to a revocable living trust registered in my son's name thirty days before my father passed away," Claire continued, leaning in slightly. "The only thing inside that vault in Zurich is a locked steel box."

"What's in the box?!" Grant yelled, his eyes wide with rising terror. "WHAT IS IN THE VAULT, CLAIRE?!"

May you like

Claire looked down at her bandaged hand, then back up at him.

"A full audit trail of your father-in-law's personal investigation into your illegal offshore gambling debts," Claire answered softly. "My father kept it locked in Switzerland just in case you ever tried to extort me."
