Chapter 7 - The Masterstroke

Grant stood up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the concrete floor.
"NO! That's impossible! You're bluffing!" Grant shrieked, banging his handcuffed fists against the reinforced glass. "You're lying to me!"
"Guard," Claire said into the receiver, signaling the officer standing in the corner. "He’s becoming aggressive."
The corrections officer immediately grabbed Grant by his orange shoulder, forcing him back down into the chair.
Arthur Vance stepped up beside Claire, opening his leather portfolio and sliding a thick document against the glass.
"Mr. Mercer," Arthur said coldly through his own speaker. "As of eight o'clock this morning, the Swiss Federal Banking Authority opened the Zurich vault under a mutual cooperation request with the U.S. Federal Prosecutor's office. The contents of that box have already been cataloged."
Grant stared at the documents, his breath coming in short, panicked gasps.
"In addition to the gambling debts," Arthur continued with deep satisfaction, "the box contained signed affidavits from three of your shell company accountants detailing every single illegal transaction you orchestrated over the past four years. Your wife didn't even need to testify against you. Your own father-in-law set this trap from beyond the grave."
Grant looked at Claire, tears of pure horror streaming down his cheeks. The reality of his absolute, unmitigated defeat smashed into him like a tidal wave.
He had no leverage. He had no money. He had no legacy.
He had played a game against a woman who had been five steps ahead of him before he even began.
"Claire..." Grant wept, his forehead resting flat against the cold glass. "Claire, please... don't do this to me. I was foolish. Sloane seduced me! She manipulated me! I love you, Claire! I love our baby!"
Claire stood up slowly, smoothing the front of her cream coat.
"You don't love our baby, Grant," Claire said, her voice completely devoid of emotion. "You loved the money that came with him."
"Claire! Please! I'll do anything! Don't leave me in here!" Grant begged, hysterically sobbing as the guards began unhooking his chains to haul him back to his cell. "Claire! CLAIRE!"
Claire didn't turn back. She turned her heels and walked down the long, echoing hallway toward the exit.
When they stepped out of the facility into the bright morning sunlight, a massive crowd of journalists, news vans, and flashing cameras was waiting behind police barricades.
"Mrs. Mercer! Mrs. Mercer!" a reporter shouted, pushing a microphone forward. "Is it true that you’ve taken over Mercer Enterprises as sole Chairperson?!"
"Mrs. Mercer! What is the status of Sloane Avery's criminal trial?!"
"Mrs. Mercer! Will you be renaming the hospital wing?!"
Claire paused at the top of the concrete steps, Arthur Vance standing beside her like a loyal guardian. She raised her uninjured hand, and the noisy mob instantly went dead silent, waiting for her words.
Claire looked directly into the camera lenses.
"Today, Mercer Enterprises is officially being rebranded as the Sterling-Mercer Trust," Claire announced, her voice clear and commanding, carrying across the crowded street. "Starting immediately, seventy percent of all corporate profits will be redirected into emergency shelters and legal assistance funds for victims of domestic abuse and financial coercion."
The reporters gasped, writing furiously on their pads.
"And as for my personal life," Claire added, resting her hand protectively over her heart and her unborn child. "The past is closed. My son and I are looking forward to a very bright, very clean future."
As she stepped into the back of her waiting black limousine, her phone buzzed with a breaking news alert:
BREAKING: SLOANE AVERY PLEADS GUILTY TO ASSAULT & FINANCIAL FRAUD; FACES 8 YEARS IN MAXIMUM SECURITY
BREAKING: GRANT MERCER CHARGED WITH MULTIPLE COUNTS OF FEDERAL EMBEZZLEMENT & EXTORTION; BAIL REVOKED PERMANENTLY
Claire closed the news app, leaned back against the plush leather seat, and looked out the window at the Chicago skyline shining beneath a clear blue sky.

The rain had stopped.
And for the first time in six years, Claire Mercer was completely, beautifully free.
