Chapter 8 - The Viper’s Last Nest

Six weeks had passed since the downfall of Grant Mercer and Sloane Avery.

The city of Chicago had undergone a seismic shift. The newly branded Sterling-Mercer Trust was thriving, its stock soaring after Claire announced groundbreaking investments in clean energy technology and women’s protective shelters.

Claire spent her days inside her father’s former penthouse office on the top floor of the Sterling-Mercer Tower. Her pregnant bump was pronounced now at thirty-six weeks, a beautiful and constant reminder of the life she was protecting.

Everything seemed secured. Grant was rotting in a federal detention center awaiting trial, and Sloane was sitting in a county jail cell after her guilty plea.

Or so Claire thought.

It was 4:00 PM on a stormy Tuesday afternoon when Arthur Vance entered Claire’s office without knocking. His face, usually a mask of unyielding calm, was pale.

"Claire," Arthur said, closing the double mahogany doors. "We have a critical breach."

Claire set down her digital pen. "What happened?"

"Grant’s mother, Eleanor," Arthur reported, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "She didn't just accept defeat. She liquidated her entire personal estate in Europe over the last forty-eight hours—over fifteen million dollars in physical bullion and untraceable bearer bonds."

Claire’s eyes narrowed. "Where did the money go?"

"To a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands called Nox Security Group," Arthur replied, sliding a confidential intelligence file across her desk. "It’s a private mercenary firm composed of disgraced former special forces operatives. Eleanor just hired them to pull off an illegal extradition extraction."

Claire felt a cold shiver trace her spine. "She’s trying to break Grant out of transport."

"Not trying," Arthur corrected grimly. "Grant was scheduled for a federal court transfer to the northern district prison at three-thirty today. The transport van was ambushed on the I-90 expressway fifteen minutes ago. Two guards were neutralized. Grant is loose."

Before Claire could absorb the shock, her personal satellite phone—the one number only Arthur and her security detail possessed—began to ring.

The screen displayed an encrypted, untraceable incoming line.

Arthur immediately tapped a button on his smartwatch to begin tracing the call, giving Claire a sharp nod.

Claire pressed answer and put it on speaker.

"Hello, Claire," Eleanor’s voice hissed through the speaker, distorted by wind and heavy engine noise. "Did you really think a few court orders could destroy forty years of Mercer power?"

Claire remained as steady as mountain stone. "Where is he, Eleanor?"

"He's right beside me," Eleanor laughed maniacally. "In forty minutes, our private helicopter clears state airspace. But my son refused to leave without taking back what belongs to him."

"He doesn't own a single thread on his back, Eleanor," Claire said coldly.

"He owns your future, Claire!" Grant’s frantic, unstable voice suddenly broke through the phone. He sounded completely unhinged. "I know where you are, Claire! I know you're at the tower! The power grid in your sector is going down in three minutes. Let's see how smart your high-tech security guards are in the dark!"

The line went dead.

At that exact second, the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the penthouse flickered. The overhead chandeliers died. The hum of the air conditioning ceased, replaced by the eerie, deafening silence of a total building blackout.
