Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage and the Traitorous Groom

Miles away, inside the ultra-exclusive penthouse suite of the Vance Tower overlooking the glowing neon skyline of the city, Julian Jr. poured himself a glass of neat twenty-year-old scotch. He swirled the amber liquid, staring out the floor-to-ceiling glass windows with a look of bored irritation.
The door to the master bedroom clicked open, and out stepped Evelyn, Julian Jr.’s longtime mistress and socialite darling, wearing a silk robe and a triumphant smirk. She walked up behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist and pressing her cheek against his back.
“Is the little peasant girl finally dealt with?” Evelyn whispered, kissing his shoulder. “Honestly, Julian, I can’t believe you actually married her, even for a week. The thought of that commoner wearing the Vance family crest makes my skin crawl.”
Julian Jr. scoffed, taking a long sip of his scotch. “Relax, Eve. It was a strategic necessity. Her father’s old land parcels sit right in the middle of our upcoming commercial development zone. We needed her signature to bypass the zoning board legally without triggering a federal audit. Once she signed the property transfer papers tonight, her usefulness expired.”
“And if she didn’t sign?” Evelyn purred, her eyes glittering with cruelty.
“Then the cold room would have softened her up by morning,” Julian Jr. laughed coldly, turning around to face her. “My father went down to their little hovel to finish the job and bring her back or dispose of the problem. Knowing Dad, she’s probably crying in the back of the car right now, ready to sign anything just to stop the nightmare.”
At that exact moment, the private elevator chime chimed softly. The heavy iron doors slid open, and Julian Vance stumbled out.
Julian Jr. and Evelyn froze.
The man who stepped out of the elevator looked nothing like the untouchable billionaire patriarch who had left two hours earlier. His Tom Ford suit was torn, stained with mud and grass. His hair was disheveled, his face bruised, and his eyes wide with a lingering, visceral terror that he had never experienced in his entire life.
“Dad?!” Julian Jr. dropped his crystal glass, shattering it against the imported marble floor. “What happened?! Who did this to you? Was it the police? Was it the Chen syndicate?”
Julian ignored his son. He collapsed into a leather sofa, his hands shaking so violently he couldn't hold a glass of water. It took him three attempts to find his voice.
“Get… get the security council on the phone right now,” Julian wheezed, clutching his bruised throat. “Call every lawyer, every fixer, every asset we have.”
“Dad, calm down! Tell me what happened!” Julian Jr. demanded, stepping closer. “Did you get the signature? Where is Clara?”
“She’s not a peasant, you fool!” Julian snarled, grabbing his son by the collar of his shirt, pulling him down to eye level. “Her father… her father is Arthur Sterling!”
Julian Jr. frowned, confused. “Arthur Sterling? The baker? The guy who runs that rundown pastry shop on 4th Street? Are you out of your mind? You got beaten up by a baker?!”
May you like
“You idiot!” Julian roared, spitting blood onto the carpet. “Twenty years ago, before he went off the grid, Arthur Sterling wasn't a baker. He was The Phantom—the legendary corporate cleaner and black-ops broker who single-handedly brought down three Fortune 500 companies and vanished with enough black-mail data to hang half the government! And we just declared war on him.”
The color drained entirely from Julian Jr.’s face. Evelyn stepped back, her hand flying to her mouth in sudden, icy dread.
