Chapter 6 - The Web Closes In

Within two hours, the Vance empire—a titan that had dominated the city’s shipping and real estate landscape for decades—collapsed like a house of cards built on a foundation of quicksand.
Outside the Vance Tower, media vans crowded the curbside. Microphones and cameras thrust forward as investigative journalists broadcasted live updates about the massive federal raid currently taking place inside the building. Federal agents in tactical gear were seen carting out boxes of documents, while accountants and executives were escorted out in handcuffs.
Inside the building, Julian Vance sat slumped in a chair in the corner of the boardroom, broken and defeated. His expensive suit was wrinkled, his empire gone, his legacy reduced to ashes in a matter of hours.
Julian Jr. tried to run toward the private exit elevators, but the doors slid open to reveal two federal marshals waiting with silver cuffs ready. With a pathetic cry, Julian Jr. dropped to his knees as the cold metal snapped around his wrists.
Across the room, leaning against the glass wall overlooking the bustling city, Arthur watched the downfall with an expression of calm indifference. His burner phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out and answered.
“Dad,” Clara’s voice came through the speaker, clear and strong. “Marcus Vance at The Chronicle just published the front-page story. Social media is blowing up. Every local outlet is running the coverage. The land titles for our family estate have already been officially transferred back to our name by the emergency board decree.”
“Good,” Arthur replied softly. “Pack a bag, sweetheart. Mom and I are picking you up in twenty minutes. We’re going on a proper vacation. Far away from here.”
As Arthur hung up, the heavy oak doors opened once more. Evelyn, the socialite mistress who had mocked Clara the night before, walked in frantically, her designer handbag dragging on the floor, her makeup smeared with tears. She ran straight toward Arthur, dropping to her knees and grabbing the hem of his trousers.
“Mr. Sterling! Please! You have to help me!” Evelyn sobbed hysterically. “I didn't have anything to do with what they did to Clara! I was just… I was just forced to stay here! Please, don't let them arrest me! I have money, I can give you—”
Arthur looked down at her with cold, unwavering pity. He gently pulled his trousers from her grip, stepping back.

“Greed is a disease, Evelyn,” Arthur said quietly. “And the cure is accountability.”
He turned his back on her, walking toward the private elevator without a backward glance, leaving the wreckage of the Vance family behind him as the elevator doors slid shut, sealing away the ghosts of the past forever.
