Chapter 10 - The Truth Unveiled

By 8:00 PM, the storm outside had cleared, leaving the Blackwater skyline glittering beneath a cold, merciless blanket of winter stars.

The retraction from Channel Four had aired twenty minutes earlier. The station manager had appeared on live television to issue a full, unreserved apology, admitting that the documents regarding Elena Hart’s departure from Mercy General had been altered and leaked by an anonymous third party tied to the Vance Group. Furthermore, Director Thomas Vance had officially submitted his resignation to the city council an hour prior, citing “sudden personal health reasons.”

Inside the penthouse nursery, the room was quiet.

The monitors blinked their steady green rhythms. The twin boy and girl were resting peacefully, their breathing regular and strong.

Elena sat in the rocking chair by the corner, her fingers resting lightly on her knees, staring down at the polished wood floor. The adrenaline of the standoff had faded, leaving behind the heavy, hollow exhaustion of someone who had survived another battle in a war that wasn't hers.

A heavy, measured tread approached the doorway.

Roman walked in carrying a steaming mug of tea, holding it out toward her without a word.

Elena looked up, took the mug, and let out a small, tired sigh. “You didn't have to threaten the health director with a firing squad, Roman.”

“It wasn't a firing squad,” Roman corrected dryly, leaning his shoulder against the doorframe. “Just very persuasive negotiations.”

A faint smile touched Elena’s lips despite herself. She took a small sip of the tea—lemon and honey, exactly the way she liked it, though she had never told him.

“How did you know about Chicago?” Elena asked quietly, her eyes fixed on the ceramic rim of her mug. “How did you find out what really happened at Mercy General?”

“When I put my security team on your background check yesterday morning, they didn't just pull your employment file,” Roman said, his voice softening just a fraction. “They pulled the original court transcripts from the whistleblower deposition you filed two years ago. The administrator who framed you was indicted for medical fraud six months after you left. He’s currently serving time in a federal penitentiary.”

Elena froze. She looked up slowly, her heart skipping a beat against her ribs.

“You read the whole deposition?”

“Every word,” Roman said, stepping closer until he was standing beside her chair. “You risked your entire career, your reputation, and your livelihood to expose a corrupt surgeon who was putting patients at risk to save his own skin. And yet, when you came to St. Jude’s, you were treated like an outcast.”

“In medicine, people like clean lies over messy truths,” Elena said softly. “It’s easier to blame the nurse than admit the system is broken.”

“Not in my world,” Roman said, his dark eyes holding hers with an intensity that made it difficult to breathe. “In my world, loyalty is the only currency that matters. And you’ve proven more loyalty to my family in forty-eight hours than most people manage in a lifetime.”

Elena looked away, feeling the heat rise in her cheeks. She set the mug down on the side table. “I’m just doing my job, Roman.”

“Stop calling it a job, Elena,” Roman whispered, stepping in close enough for her to feel the warmth of his presence. He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently touching her chin, forcing her to look up at him. “You’re not just a nurse anymore. You’re the only person I trust with what matters most.”

Before Elena could answer, the secure intercom on the wall buzzed again.

Marcus’s voice came through, urgent and sharp.

“Boss, we have an unexpected visitor in the lobby. Someone who managed to slip past our outer perimeter without triggering the security alarms.”

Roman’s jaw tightened, the dangerous predator returning in a single heartbeat. “Who?”

“Victoria Thorne,” Marcus said grimly. “She says she wants to negotiate the terms of your surrender.”
