Chapter 6 - The Viper in the Boardroom

The executive boardroom on the fortieth floor of the Vance Tower was designed to intimidate. Floor-to-ceiling glass panels offered a panoramic view of the Blackwater harbor, where dozens of massive container ships bearing the D’Angelo logo sat docked like sleeping leviathans.
Julian Vance stood by the glass, swirling a glass of scotch, his face bruised on one cheek where one of Roman’s security enforcers had left a permanent calling card the night before.
The heavy mahogany door swung open without a knock.
A woman stepped into the room. She didn't wear the polished, corporate armor of Sabrina Voss or the understated scrubs of a hospital nurse. She wore a tailored crimson pantsuit that commanded the room before she even spoke a single word. Her hair was pulled back into a severe, immaculate bun, and her lips carried the dark, bruised crimson of crushed velvet.
Victoria Thorne. General counsel and silent shadow-partner of the Thorne Global Syndicate, a secretive holding corporation operating out of Zurich and Boston.
“You look like a man who just lost twenty million dollars and his favorite toy,” Victoria said, her voice smooth, cutting, and entirely devoid of warmth as she took a seat at the head of the conference table.
Vance slammed his glass down on the wood, the scotch splashing over the rim. “Roman cleaned us out. He froze our debt portfolios, seized Sabrina’s assets under anti-fraud statutes, and bought out our primary banking partners before the sun even came up. The man is a maniac.”
“He is not a maniac, Julian. He is a tactician,” Victoria corrected coldly, leaning forward to rest her elbows on the polished table. “And you walked right into his trap like an amateur playing chess against a grandmaster. You used a low-level operative like Sabrina Voss. What did you expect? She cracked under the first five minutes of real pressure.”
“She was supposed to freeze his real estate assets through the probate loophole,” Vance hissed, leaning over the table. “If she had claimed the pregnancy, the court would have stayed the harbor development for six months. We would have had time to restructure.”
“Probate law only applies to legitimate claims, Julian. Not amateur theatricals,” Victoria replied, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. “Roman D’Angelo is distracted right now. His wife is dead, and his premature twins are sitting in an incubator at St. Jude’s under twenty-four-hour armed guard. A man protecting his children is at his most dangerous—but he is also at his most vulnerable.”
Vance frowned, his anger momentarily giving way to caution. “What are you saying?”
“I am saying we don't need Sabrina Voss to play our game,” Victoria said softly, pulling a thin leather dossier from her briefcase and sliding it across the mahogany table. On the cover was a photograph of Elena Hart leaving the hospital gates during her morning break. “Roman has surrounded himself with a very interesting nurse. A woman named Elena Hart. Clean record, sharp mind, unyielding morals... and a history that can easily be rewritten.”
Vance picked up the dossier, flipping open the pages to reveal employment records, apartment lease agreements, and medical certificates from Chicago. “What about her?”
“Two years ago, Elena Hart blew the whistle on a chief surgeon at Mercy General who was falsifying drug logs,” Victoria said, a predatory smile touching her lips. “The hospital administration buried her in lawsuits, revoked her local accreditation, and forced her out of the state with a silenced NDA. Roman thinks she’s a saint who saved his children.”

“And you want to prove she’s not?” Vance asked, his eyes lighting up with sudden comprehension.
“I want to make Roman D’Angelo believe that the woman holding his children’s lives in her hands is the exact same kind of viper as Sabrina Voss,” Victoria said, standing up and buttoning her crimson jacket. “A man who has been betrayed once will destroy anyone who touches his children a second time. And when Roman turns on his precious nurse, we will pick up the pieces of his shattered empire.”
