Chapter 13 - Spring on the Harbor

Three months later, the bitter winter sleet of Blackwater City had given way to the warm, golden sunlight of a bright May morning.

The harbor was alive with activity. Dozens of massive container ships bearing the D’Angelo crest moved smoothly across the sparkling blue water, guided by a shipping syndicate that was now cleaner, stronger, and more transparent than it had ever been in its history.

On the wide, sun-drenched terrace of the Harbor View penthouse, two white wicker bassinets sat side by side beneath a canopy of blooming white jasmine.

Inside the left bassinet, a baby boy with a full head of dark hair slept soundly, his tiny fists curled tightly against his cheeks. Inside the right, a baby girl kicked her legs in happy defiance against her pink cotton blanket, her grip clamped firmly around Roman’s index finger.

Roman knelt beside the bassinets, dressed in a casual linen shirt and dark trousers, looking every bit the modern patriarch of an empire that had finally found peace.

Behind him, soft footsteps approached across the hardwood floor.

Elena stepped out onto the terrace, wearing a simple summer sundress, her hair falling in loose waves around her shoulders. She carried a tray with two tall glasses of fresh lemonade and a small medical logbook tucked under her arm.

“The pediatrician’s office called,” Elena announced with a bright, teasing smile as she set the tray down on the patio table. “Both twins passed their three-month milestone checkup with flying colors. Weight is up, lungs are clear, and our son has officially decided he hates tummy time.”

Roman stood up, walking over to wrap his arms around her waist from behind, pulling her flush against his chest as he rested his chin on her shoulder.

“Of course they passed,” Roman murmured against her neck, inhaling the clean scent of jasmine and vanilla that always followed her. “They have the best nurse in the city looking after them.”

“Former nurse, Mr. D’Angelo,” Elena corrected playfully, turning her head to press a light kiss against his cheek. “Remember? I retired from hospital shifts the day we incorporated the Naomi D’Angelo Pediatric Research Foundation.”

“A foundation funded entirely by liquidated Thorne assets,” Roman noted with a dark, satisfied smirk. “Vance is currently doing five years in a federal penitentiary for financial fraud, and the state health board has been entirely restructured. Blackwater City is finally a safe place to raise children.”

“And to run an empire,” Elena added softly, leaning back into his embrace as they both looked out over the sparkling harbor where the morning sun danced across the water.

From down on the docks, the deep, resonant horn of a D’Angelo cargo ship blew a long, welcoming salute to the new day—a sound not of warning, but of safe harbor, finally reached at last.
