Chapter 9 - The Siege of Harbor View

The heavy security doors of the D’Angelo penthouse hissed open with an ominous metallic thud.

Three men stepped out of the private elevator into the marble foyer. Leading them was Director Thomas Vance—Julian Vance’s older brother and head of the municipal health board—flanked by two armed city marshals whose hands rested nervously on the holster straps of their sidearms.

“Mr. D’Angelo,” Director Vance said, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses with an air of bureaucratic smugness that barely masked his underlying cowardice. “We have an emergency health and safety warrant issued by the magistrate judge twenty minutes ago. In light of the public revelations regarding Nurse Hart’s disciplinary record, the state is ordering an immediate protective seizure of the infants until independent guardianship can be established.”

Roman didn't move. He stood at the edge of the living room, his hands casually slipped into his trouser pockets, his dark coat still slung over the back of the sofa.

“You brought marshals into my home, Director Vance,” Roman said, his voice deceptively calm, like the surface of a deep ocean before a hurricane.

“We are executing a legal court order,” Vance insisted, stepping forward with a crisp piece of parchment paper in his hand. “Step aside, Mr. D’Angelo. If you obstruct this transfer, we will add felony obstruction of justice to your charges.”

Elena stepped out from the nursery hallway, her face pale but her jaw set with unyielding determination. “The warrants are based on fabricated defamation from a morning news broadcast. Look at the charts, Director. If you move these babies out of a humidity-controlled environment right now, their lungs will collapse within ten minutes.”

“Quiet, Nurse Hart,” Vance sneered, his eyes flashing with vindictive triumph. “Your medical credentials were revoked in Chicago two years ago. Your opinion here carries no more weight than a common street vendor’s.”

That was the mistake.

Not the threat against Roman. Not the legal paperwork. But the exact moment Vance dismissed the woman who had kept Roman’s children breathing while the rest of the world played politics.

Roman didn't raise his voice. He didn't yell.

He simply nodded once toward the hallway behind the marshals.

The elevator doors chimed again.

Four armed men from Roman’s private security detail—led by Marcus—stepped out silently behind the city marshals, their sidearms drawn and leveled directly at the center of the foyer. The metallic click of four safety catches sliding off echoed like thunder through the marble hall.

The two city marshals froze, their hands hovering uselessly over their holsters as they realized they had walked directly into a slaughterhouse.

“Drop the badges, boys,” Marcus growled quietly, stepping up right behind Director Vance.

Vance’s smug expression vanished in a single heartbeat, replaced by stark, choking terror. “Mr. D’Angelo—you can’t do this! This is a state warrant! This is federal territory—!”

“This is my home,” Roman interrupted, walking slowly across the room until he stood towering over the trembling health director. “And those are my children. Your brother tried to play a game with my real estate, and he lost his company. You tried to play a game with my family, and you just walked into a trap.”

Roman reached out, snatched the emergency warrant out of Vance’s shaking hand, and tore it slowly into four neat pieces, letting them flutter to the marble floor like dead leaves.

“Marcus, call the state attorney general,” Roman instructed without breaking eye contact with the terrified director. “Inform him that Director Vance is currently trespassing in my residence under fraudulent pretenses, and that his emergency warrant was obtained using falsified evidence provided by the Vance Group.”

“Right away, boss,” Marcus said, stepping forward to relieve the city marshals of their sidearms with practiced ease.

“As for you, Director,” Roman whispered, leaning in close enough for Vance to smell the bitter scotch on his breath. “You have exactly one hour to resign your position on the health board, issue a public apology for the smear campaign against Nurse Hart, and leave Blackwater City. If you miss your flight, my men won't bother with warrants next time.”
