Chapter 8 - The Smear Campaign

The twenty-four-hour news ticker at the bottom of the flat-screen television in the penthouse living room flashed in bright, obnoxious red letters: D’ANGELO SYNDICATE TIED TO DISGRACED NURSE IN ST. JUDE’S COVER-UP SCANDAL.

Elena stood frozen in the center of the room, staring at the screen as an anchorwoman with a practiced, sympathetic sneer read a fabricated timeline of her departure from Mercy General.

“...sources close to the hospital administration allege that Elena Hart was forced to resign following a series of unexplained drug discrepancies in the neonatal ward. Now, questions are mounting as billionaire Roman D’Angelo moves the disgraced nurse directly into his private residence to care for his newborn twins...”

The remote control shattered against the wall as Roman hurled it with enough force to crack the drywall. The television screen went black with a spark of blue static.

“Vance,” Roman growled, his voice dropping into a register so dark it sounded like grinding stones. “He’s trying to discredit you so the state health board revokes your license and forces an emergency transfer of the babies back to the public ward.”

Elena didn't move. She stood rigid, her hands trembling slightly at her sides—not from fear, but from the cold, suffocating familiarity of a nightmare she thought she had outrun two years ago.

“They’re using my past,” she whispered, her voice hollow. “The exact lie my old director tried to pin on me when I reported his drug logs. They’ve twisted the court filings.”

Roman crossed the room in two strides, his large hands gripping her shoulders with an ironclad, grounding grip. “Look at me.”

Elena forced her eyes up to meet his.

“I don't care what some hack journalist on Channel Four fabricated,” Roman said, his voice dropping into a fierce, absolute command. “I know who you are. I know what you did in that hospital corridor, and I know how you saved my daughter’s life yesterday morning. No one is taking those babies. And no one is touching your license.”

“Roman, if the health board launches an official inquiry, they’ll freeze our medical clearance,” Elena said, her professional panic finally breaking through her professional facade. “The twins can’t survive a transfer back to the public hospital. Their immune systems—!”

“They aren't going anywhere,” Roman interrupted, his grip tightening reassuringly. He pulled out his satellite phone again, tapping the screen with blinding speed. “Marcus. Get our legal team on the phone with the state attorney general. File an immediate defamation injunction against Channel Four and the Vance Group. And have our private security detail pick up the station manager who approved that broadcast. Bring him here. I want a retraction before the morning paper hits.”

Elena stared at him, the sheer terrifying efficiency of the man washing over her. There was no hesitation, no doubt—only an absolute, relentless war machine moving to crush anyone who dared threaten his circle.

“You’re going to war with an entire media network over a nurse?” Elena asked, her voice barely audible.

“You aren't just a nurse anymore, Elena,” Roman said, his dark eyes holding hers with a dangerous, possessive intensity. “You’re inside my fortress. And anyone who comes after my family answers to me.”

Before Elena could process the weight of his words, the secure intercom on the penthouse wall chimed with a sharp, insistent ring.

Marcus’s voice came through the speaker, breathless and tense.

“Boss, we have a problem at the lobby elevators. The state health inspector just arrived with an emergency seizure warrant for the twins, accompanied by two city marshals.”
