Chapter 18: The Escape

The commercial kitchen was abandoned, the catering staff having fled the moment the first shots rang out. Pots of boiling water hissed aggressively on the massive industrial stoves, filling the air with a thick, humid steam that clung to Elena’s skin. The smell of searing filet mignon mixed grotesquely with the sharp, metallic tang of cordite lingering on Silas’s clothes.

"Keep moving," Silas ordered, taking the lead as they navigated the labyrinth of stainless-steel prep stations. He kept his weapon raised, his eyes scanning the narrow corridors leading to the loading docks and service elevators.

They pushed through a set of heavy fire doors, entering the dim, concrete service hallway. At the far end, two massive freight elevators stood waiting. But they weren't alone.

Standing in the center of the hallway, bathed in the sickly yellow glow of the fluorescent utility lights, was Julian.

He looked terrible. He had stripped off his tuxedo jacket, revealing a white dress shirt soaked in sweat. His face was a patchwork of fading yellow bruises and new, frantic desperation. His right hand was wrapped tightly around a heavy, large-caliber handgun. His hands were shaking so violently the barrel bobbed up and down in the air.

"That's far enough," Julian yelled, his voice cracking, entirely devoid of the polished, aristocratic confidence he had carried all his life. He looked like a cornered rat.

Elena stopped, roughly thirty feet away. She didn't raise her weapon. She simply stared at him, tilting her head slightly as if observing a fascinating, tragic piece of modern art. Silas stepped slightly in front of her, aiming his machine pistol squarely at Julian’s chest.

"Put it down, Julian," Silas said, his voice flat and calm. "The safety is still on. You pull that trigger, nothing happens, and you die."

Julian looked down at the gun in panic, his thumb fumbling awkwardly against the side of the weapon. He managed to click the safety off with a loud, metallic snap. He raised the gun again, pointing it directly at Elena’s chest.

"You ruined my life!" Julian screamed, tears of pure, undiluted rage streaming down his bruised face. "You took my mother's company, you blew up my car, you humiliated me in front of the entire world! Why? Because of something my parents did before you were even old enough to walk?"

"Because you were built on the bones of my family," Elena replied, her voice echoing coldly down the concrete corridor. "You drove the cars bought with my father’s blood. You lived in the house paid for by his suicide. And when you finally had the chance to be something better, you slapped me across the face and proved you are exactly what your mother raised you to be."

Julian let out a guttural, agonizing cry, gripping the gun with both hands. "I'm going to kill you!"

"No, you're not," Silas stated.

Everything happened in a fraction of a second. Julian pulled the trigger. The heavy handgun bucked violently in his untrained hands, the recoil throwing his aim wildly off center.

The bullet tore through the air, completely missing Elena, but grazing the side of Silas’s shoulder. Blood immediately sprayed against the concrete wall, and Silas let out a sharp, involuntary grunt of pain, his left arm dropping slightly.

But Silas was a professional. Even wounded, his reflexes were instantaneous. Before Julian could even attempt to recover from the recoil and take a second shot, Silas fired a single, controlled round.

The bullet caught Julian right in the upper thigh.

Julian screamed—a high, piercing sound of absolute agony. The handgun flew from his grip, clattering uselessly across the concrete floor. He collapsed, clutching his leg as dark blood began to pool rapidly beneath him, staining his white shirt and black trousers. He writhed on the floor, gasping for air, the fight completely drained out of him.

Silas pressed a hand to his bleeding shoulder, his jaw tight. "Elevator," he grunted to Elena, nodding toward the open doors at the end of the hall.

Elena walked slowly toward the elevator, her heels clicking rhythmically against the concrete. She didn't rush. She stepped over Julian’s discarded gun and stopped right beside him. Julian looked up at her, his face pale and twisted in pain, his chest heaving.

"Elena, please," he gasped out, his fingers desperately clutching at the hem of her red dress. "Please. I'm bleeding out."

She looked down at him, her dark eyes completely empty. The boy she had married—the arrogant, cruel heir to an empire—was gone. In his place was a pathetic, broken thing bleeding on a dirty concrete floor.

She gently pulled the silk of her dress out of his grasping, bloodied fingers.

May you like

"You survive this," Elena whispered softly, bending down slightly so only he could hear her over the distant wail of approaching sirens, "so you can watch the rest of it burn."

She turned and stepped into the freight elevator, standing perfectly still beside Silas as the heavy metal doors slowly slid shut, leaving Julian screaming alone in the dark.
