Chapter 24: The Break-In

Julian stood at the top of the sweeping double staircase in the grand foyer, his aluminum crutch tucked under his left arm, the Glock 19 gripped tightly in his sweating right hand. His leg was a continuous, throbbing beacon of agony, but the adrenaline surging through his system muted the pain to a dull roar.

He had heard the muffled echoes of his mother’s screams from the back of the house, followed by the terrifying, booming resonance of Elena’s voice through the PA system. He knew what it meant. The psychological torture was over. The physical assault was imminent.

He stared down at the heavy oak front doors. The antique console table he had dragged in front of them looked pathetically inadequate—a child’s fort built to stop a hurricane.

He didn't have to wait long.

At exactly midnight, a localized, perfectly shaped charge of C4 detonated against the reinforced steel hinges of the main doors.

The explosion was deafening in the cavernous space of the foyer. A blinding flash of orange light strobed across the Italian marble. The heavy oak doors, weighing several hundred pounds each, were blown violently inward, splintering the antique console table into a thousand pieces of lethal shrapnel. A shockwave of concussive force rolled up the staircase, knocking Julian off his good foot. He hit the carpeted stairs hard, the crutch clattering away from him into the darkness.

A thick, choking cloud of pulverized wood, plaster dust, and cordite instantly filled the lower level. Julian scrambled to his knees, his ears ringing with a high-pitched whine, raising the Glock and aiming it blindly into the swirling smoke.

Through the dust, a shadow moved.

Silas stepped through the ruined doorway. He was dressed entirely in matte black tactical gear, a thermal monocular pulled down over his right eye, a suppressed, short-barreled rifle gripped tightly against his uninjured shoulder. He moved with a terrifying, liquid grace, completely unaffected by the chaos of the breach. He didn't look like a man who had taken a bullet twenty-four hours ago; he looked like the Grim Reaper stepping over a threshold.

Julian panicked. He didn't aim; he simply pulled the trigger.

The heavy boom of the Glock shattered the ringing silence. The muzzle flash illuminated Julian’s terrified face. The bullet sparked harmlessly against the stone archway ten feet to Silas’s left.

Silas didn't even flinch. He smoothly raised the suppressed rifle, tracking the muzzle flash.

Pfft-pfft-pfft. Three suppressed rounds bit into the plaster wall mere inches from Julian’s head, showering him in white dust. Julian screamed, throwing himself flat against the carpeted stairs, firing wildly through the banisters. It was a sloppy, desperate spray of bullets, completely devoid of tactical discipline. He was firing at shadows, emptying the fifteen-round magazine in less than ten seconds.

The slide of his Glock locked back with an empty, metallic clack. He was out of ammunition.

Silas stopped firing. He stood perfectly still at the base of the stairs, hidden in the dissipating smoke, waiting. He was playing with his food.
