Chapter 25: The Mother's Fall

Deep in the west wing, Victoria heard the unmistakable, thunderous roar of the front doors blowing inward, followed by the rapid, terrifying exchange of gunfire.
The sound snapped her out of her paralyzing despair. The maternal instinct—the absolute, primal need to protect her offspring at any cost—overrode her terror. She scrambled off the freezing stone balcony, abandoning her designer purse and her ruined pride, and bolted through the dark, sprawling corridors of the mansion.
"Julian!" she screamed, her voice raw, tearing through the empty hallways.
She rounded the corner of the second-floor landing just as Julian emptied his final magazine. She saw her son lying flat on the carpeted stairs, his face pale and smeared with plaster dust, frantically pawing at his empty weapon.
"Julian, no!" Victoria shrieked, throwing herself toward the top of the grand staircase. She didn't have a plan. She didn't have a weapon. She only knew she had to get between her son and the monster waiting in the dark below.
She reached the top step, grabbing Julian’s blood-soaked shirt by the collar, desperately trying to drag him backward away from the banister. "Stop fighting! Put it down! Julian, please!"
Down in the foyer, the smoke finally began to clear, drifting lazily up toward the dark chandelier. Silas stepped forward, his boots crunching softly on the splintered wood and shattered marble. He looked up, his thermal optic locking onto the two glowing heat signatures struggling at the top of the stairs.
He didn't hesitate. Silas was a professional. He had a contract, and the contract demanded the end of the Julian bloodline.
Silas raised the suppressed rifle, finding his angle. He didn't aim for Julian.
Pfft. A single, suppressed shot echoed softly in the cavernous room.
Victoria gasped. The sound she made wasn't a scream; it was a short, sharp intake of air, as if all the oxygen had suddenly been vacuumed from her lungs. Her eyes went incredibly wide, staring blankly over Julian’s shoulder into the dark vaulted ceiling above.
Her grip on Julian’s shirt instantly went entirely slack.
A small, dark hole had appeared precisely in the center of her chest, right through the silk of her gray blouse. A second later, a massive bloom of dark, arterial blood rapidly expanded across the fabric.
"Mother?" Julian whispered, his voice cracking, completely paralyzed by the sudden, terrifying stillness that had overtaken her.
Victoria’s knees buckled. Without her grip to anchor her, gravity took over. She pitched forward, tumbling past Julian.
She hit the first marble step with a sickening, heavy thud. Her body went entirely limp, tumbling violently down the sweeping, curved staircase. She rolled over and over, her limbs flailing like a discarded marionette, leaving a gruesome, smeared trail of crimson across the pristine white marble stairs.

She reached the bottom landing with a final, hollow crack as her head struck the stone floor.
Julian watched in absolute, mute horror. Victoria’s body came to rest exactly in the center of the foyer—the exact same spot where Elena had fallen the night Julian slapped her. Her lifeless eyes stared blankly up at the dark chandelier. The untouchable matriarch, the architect of a ruthless empire, lay broken and bleeding out on her own foyer floor, her sins finally balanced by the unforgiving weight of a ghost's revenge.
