Chapter 16 - The Fall of the Patriarch

Four armed United States Marshals, accompanied by six Virginia State Police tactical investigators in gray combat uniforms, marched down the center aisle in synchronized, heavy strides.

Leading the federal detachment was Special Agent David Torres, holding an unsealed, red-ribboned felony arrest warrant issued thirty minutes earlier by the Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

"Charles Vale," David Torres announced, his voice vibrating through the vaulted ceiling like a naval gun. "Under the authority of the United States District Court, you are under arrest for Interstate Wire Fraud, Aggravated Forgery of a Judicial Instrument, Subornation of Arson, and Conspiracy to Obstruct Justice under the RICO Act."

Charles Vale backed into the corner of the counsel area, raising his gold-topped cane like a weapon, his silk ascot crooked, his face flushed a dark, dangerous crimson. "Keep your hands off me! I am a retired appellate judge! Richard, call the governor! Call the attorney general! You cannot shackle a Vale in this courthouse!"

Richard Sterling didn't even reach for his phone. The Norfolk attorney pushed his briefcase aside, raised both hands into the air, and stepped three paces away from his client. "I am formally withdrawing as counsel of record, Your Honor. I had zero knowledge of these fraudulent fabrications."

Two federal marshals stepped forward with practiced, overwhelming force. One marshal caught the cane, wrenching it from Charles’s grip with a single twisting torque, while the second drove Charles forward onto the mahogany counsel table!

THUD!

Charles’s aristocratic cheek slammed against the polished wood, scattering his forged legal deeds across the floorboards!

SNAP. CLICK.

The heavy, ratcheting steel handcuffs bit deeply into Charles Vale’s manicured wrists, cinching tight behind his tailored blazer with two sharp, metallic clicks!

"OW! MY WRISTS! YOU BRUTES! I’M AN OLD MAN!" Charles wailed, thrashing against the wood, spitting saliva across his own forged documents.

Judge Harrison struck her gavel with apocalyptic authority:

BANG!

"In the matter of Vale versus Mercer: This petition is hereby DISMISSED WITH PREJUDICE."

BANG!

"The 1998 deed of trust is declared VOID AB INITIO, ordered physically expunged from the land records of James City County, and remanded to federal custody as primary physical evidence of grand larceny."

BANG!

"The court assesses treble damages and statutory sanctions amounting to seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars against Charles Vale personally, payable directly to The Eleanor Mercer Sanctuary for Female Veterans."

BANG!

"Remand the prisoner to federal holding without bond. Court is adjourned."

As the marshals hauled Charles to his feet, his tailored blazer twisted, his white hair disheveled, he looked across the room and saw me standing beside David.

His eyes burned with pure, impotent venom. "You destroyed Lenora! You broke Brooke! And now you’ve ruined me! What kind of monster are you, Maya?!"

I walked slowly across the well of the courtroom, stopping twelve inches from his trembling, shackled frame.

"I am not a monster, Charles," I whispered, my voice calm, steady, and clear as a winter bell. "I am the daughter of Eleanor Mercer. And you are just a thief whose luck ran out."

May you like

The marshals dragged him through the security side door, his shackled feet dragging against the carpet, his pathetic curses echoing down the concrete holding corridor until the heavy steel door slammed shut with a final, concussive BANG.

The last pillar of the Vale dynasty was in chains.
