Chapter 23 - The Vault Ambush

At 12:45 PM, the heavy brass doors of the Dominion National Bank on Main Street were officially locked to the public. The vaulted banking hall, with its soaring marble columns and gilded plaster ceilings, was bathed in the quiet hum of central air conditioning.

Down in the subterranean basement, behind a thirty-ton circular steel vault door, the safe-deposit chamber was lined with thousands of gleaming stainless-steel lockers.

The heavy grated iron gate of the vault area clicked open.

Stepping into the chamber was Julian Vale, dressed in the dark navy tactical uniform of an armored car courier, carrying a heavy canvas duffel bag. His right hand remained casually hooked near the lapel of his jacket, concealing a suppressed .45-caliber tactical pistol.

Shuffling ahead of him was Daniel Mercer. My biological father was shivering uncontrollably, wearing an oversized civilian trench coat over his gray prison undershirt. His wrists bore dark red bruises from his handcuffs, his face gaunt, his teeth chattering in absolute terror.

"Move your feet, old man," Julian hissed in a cold, grating whisper, poking Daniel’s spine with the hidden weapon. "Box 414. Third tier on the left. Put your thumb on the scanner and turn the brass key, or I swear to God you won't live to see the lobby again."

"Julian... please," Daniel stammered, pulling the brass key from his trembling pocket. "I don't want the gold... you can take everything... just let me go to the bus station... I’ll leave the country—"

"Shut up and open the damn box!" Julian snarled.

Daniel reached up with a shaking hand, pressing his thumb against the digital biometric reader. The sensor chimed: BEEP. VERIFIED. He inserted the antique key into the dual-lock mechanism, turning it with a heavy, satisfying CLICK.

The steel door of Box 414 swung open.

Julian shoved Daniel violently aside, sending the older man sprawling onto the cold marble floor. Julian lunged forward, reaching into the deep recess of the locker, his fingers closing around a heavy velvet pouch. He ripped the drawstring open, and dozens of heavy gold coins spilled across the table, gleaming brilliantly under the fluorescent lights.

"Finally," Julian laughed, a vicious, triumphant smirk spreading across his sharp face. "Thirty years of Vale patience."

"That gold doesn't belong to the Vales, Julian," a calm, melodic voice rang out from the shadows behind the vault entrance.

Julian spun around with blinding speed, whipping his suppressed pistol from his jacket!

CLACK-CLACK.

Two red laser dots painted the bridge of Julian’s nose and the center of his chest.

Stepping out from behind the reinforced pillar was Captain Maya Mercer, dressed in black tactical utilities, her service weapon held at the low-ready, perfectly aligned with his sternum. Standing beside me, his tactical rifle locked on Julian’s right shoulder, was Major David Torres.

Behind us, four heavily armed FBI SWAT operators in full combat body armor sealed the narrow exit corridor, their carbines raised.

"Drop the weapon, Julian," David commanded, his deep baritone echoing off the steel lockers like thunder. "The exterior perimeter is locked down. Your getaway vehicle on Main Street was disabled five minutes ago. You're out of runway."
