Chapter 24 - The Reckoning of Daniel Mercer

Julian Vale’s eyes darted frantically across the vault, the red dots burning steadily against his skin. For three agonizing seconds, his finger twitched against the trigger of his pistol, calculating whether he could take a shot before the federal rifles cut him down.
"Do it, Julian," I said softly, my voice completely devoid of fear. "Give me a reason."
Julian’s chest heaved. The realization that he had walked into a steel-walled trap completely shattered his arrogant resolve. With a bitter, venomous curse, he opened his fingers, letting the heavy pistol clatter onto the marble floor.
"KICK IT BACK! ON YOUR KNEES!" David roared.
Julian kicked the gun away, dropping heavily to his knees with his hands locked behind his head. Two SWAT operators lunged forward, driving him face-down onto the floor:
SNAP. CLICK.
The heavy transport cuffs bit deeply into Julian’s wrists, cinching tight as he thrashed and cursed against the cold stone.
On the floor beside the safe-deposit table, Daniel Mercer was curled into a pathetic, trembling ball, weeping openly into his sleeves. "Maya... Maya, my baby... thank God... you saved me... he was going to kill me..."
Daniel scrambled to his knees, his trembling, liver-spotted hands reaching out toward the cuffs of my combat boots.
I did not step forward to help him. I took one slow, deliberate step backward, looking down at him with the cold, unyielding detachment of an officer surveying a piece of discarded debris on an asphalt runway.
"I didn't come to save you, Daniel," I spoke, each word dropping like an iron anvil onto his head.
Daniel froze, his tear-streaked face looking up in bewildered horror. "Maya... I’m your father..."
"You stopped being my father when you watched Brooke break my ribs in Quantico," I said, my voice cutting through the vault like a surgeon's blade. "You didn't call the police then. You didn't stop them. And today, you walked into this bank to hand my mother's last legacy over to a mercenary to save your own miserable skin."
"He had a gun to my head!" Daniel sobbed, clutching his chest. "What was I supposed to do?!"
"You were supposed to be a man," David spoke from behind me, his eyes blazing with disgust. "You had twenty opportunities to alert the bank guards during the transit. Instead, you guided him straight to the vault."
Agent Miller stepped forward, producing a fresh pair of federal transport restraints.
"Daniel Mercer," Agent Miller announced formally, pulling Daniel’s arms behind his back. "Under Title 18 of the United States Code, you are charged with Felony Escape from Federal Custody, Grand Larceny of Bank Assets, and Conspiracy to Evade Lawful Sentence."
SNAP. CLICK.
Daniel shrieked in despair as the cold steel locked over his wrists once again. "No! Please! I can't go back to Petersburg! They’ll add ten years to my sentence! Maya, tell them! I’m an old man! I’ll die in prison!"
I turned my back on his screams, walking to the safe-deposit box. I reached inside, lifting my mother’s handwritten journals with gloved hands, pressing them gently against my chest.
The gold, the jewels, and the documents were safe.

The cowards were in chains.
And the door to my past was permanently, irrevocably welded shut.
