Chapter 25 - The Dismal Swamp Raid

While Julian Vale and Daniel Mercer were being booked into the federal detention wing at the Richmond city jail, ninety miles southeast, the final phase of Operation Vale Sunset was executing with military precision.
The Great Dismal Swamp along the Virginia-North Carolina border was a dense wilderness of cypress trees, blackwater canals, and suffocating fog. Hidden on an elevated three-acre island off an abandoned logging canal was Julian Vale’s mercenary compound—a cluster of fortified steel outbuildings powered by industrial generators, protected by heavy chain-link fences and private security sensors.
At 15:30, the silence of the swamp was ripped apart by the roar of four Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters swooping low over the cypress canopy.
A combined task force consisting of forty operators from the FBI Hostage Rescue Team, Virginia State Police Tactical Operations, and Marine Corps Military Police fast-roped onto the compound’s gravel courtyard!
Concussion grenades and flashbangs detonated in rhythmic, blinding thunder:
BANG! BANG! BOOM!
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND SURRENDER THE COMPOUND!"
Julian’s remaining seven contract mercenaries, caught completely off-guard by the simultaneous aerial and river assault, threw their automatic rifles to the mud within forty-five seconds.
Leading the clearing team into the main operations building was Colonel Vance, his service weapon drawn, his eyes sweeping the communications racks.
"Clear!" Corporal Evans shouted from the weapons storage bay.
"Clear!" another operator echoed from the communications trailer.
Inside the compound's master tactical office, technicians seized twenty-four unencrypted hard drives, satellite communication arrays linked to offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands, and a cache of illegal military-grade explosives intended for future infrastructure extortion.
Most crucially, they recovered an unsealed safe containing Charles Vale’s original, handwritten corporate ledger—a document dating back twenty years that detailed every single bribe, extortion scheme, and kickback executed between the Vale family, corrupt regional zoning officials, and offshore money-laundering cartels.
Colonel Vance walked out onto the gravel apron, taking out his satellite phone, dialing the sanctuary.
"Audrey, David," the Colonel reported, his voice rich with triumphant authority. "The swamp compound is neutralized. We have the complete financial archive. There isn't a single cent, a single weapon, or a single mercenary left to carry the Vale name. The network is completely annihilated."

Across the line, from the quiet study in Williamsburg, I exhaled a slow, deep breath of pure, untainted relief.
"Thank you, General," I whispered. "Bring our Marines home."
