Chapter 22 - The Richmond Vault

By 10:00 AM, the operations center at the sanctuary was humming with federal activity. Senior Prosecutor Marcus Reed had arrived by state police escort, accompanied by Special Agent Miller of the FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force.
On the primary display, blueprints of the historic Dominion National Bank building in downtown Richmond rotated in high-resolution 3D.
"Julian Vale isn't hiding in the woods," Marcus Reed announced, tapping his gold pen against the bank’s subterranean schematic. "Under Virginia probate laws, safe-deposit boxes registered jointly between spouses prior to 1995 remain sealed until both parties are deceased or a court order mandates inventory. When Eleanor Mercer died, Daniel Mercer refused to consent to an inventory. He claimed the key was lost. That vault box—Box 414—contains your mother’s handwritten family journals, the original stock certificates for the Mercer chemical patents, and over three million dollars in untraceable pre-1933 gold eagles."
"Julian doesn't care about the journals," I said, my voice dropping into that familiar, diamond-hard focus. "Julian needs liquidity. Charles’s legal appeals cost millions, and Julian’s mercenary network is bleeding cash under federal surveillance."
"Precisely," Agent Miller nodded. "Julian intercepted Daniel because Daniel’s biometric thumbprint and the physical brass key are the only two mechanisms that can bypass the bank’s dual-custody vault system without triggering an automated police silent lock."
"When will they move on the bank?" David asked, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes tracking the surrounding street cameras in downtown Richmond.
"Today is the quarterly vault maintenance cycle," Marcus Reed replied. "The bank closes to the public at noon for systemic safe-deposit auditing. Julian purchased three fraudulent armored courier uniforms through an online auction house last week. They will attempt entry between twelve-thirty and one o'clock, presenting Daniel under duress as an authorized box holder."
"We let them walk through the front doors," I stated flatly.
Marcus Reed looked at me, raising an eyebrow. "Maya, Julian is an armed felon with military training. Daniel is a federal fugitive."
"Daniel is a coward," I countered, looking Marcus dead in the eye. "The moment Julian gets that gold, he will put a bullet in Daniel’s skull and dump him in the James River to eliminate the only witness who can connect him to the bank breach. We don't intercept them on the street where civilians can be caught in the crossfire. We stage inside the vault. Let Julian open Box 414. Let him hold the gold in his hands. And then we take the entire network down."

David stepped beside me, his hand resting firmly on my shoulder. "I’ll coordinate the tactical deployment with the Richmond FBI SWAT team. Maya and I lead the interior containment."
Marcus Reed studied us for three seconds, then snapped his folio shut with an approving smile. "Authorization granted, Captain. Let’s go close your mother’s account."
