Chapter 12 - The Courtroom Showdown

Two months later, the trial began.
The courtroom was packed with reporters, local citizens, and former classmates who had followed the story online. My father sat at the defense table, trying to portray himself as a hardworking family man who simply made an administrative mistake.
When I took the witness stand, the defense attorney attempted to cross-examine me, trying to frame me as a bitter, ungrateful child seeking revenge for strict parenting.
"Miss Ward," the defense lawyer barked, "isn't it true that your parents provided you with shelter and food for eighteen years?"
"Yes," I replied clearly into the microphone. "And then, when I turned eighteen, they used my clean financial identity to line their own pockets and fund my brother's debt while telling the world I was a college dropout."

Mr. Vance then called our key surprise witness: the former senior loan officer from the bank where the fraudulent accounts were opened. Under oath, the loan officer confessed that my father had explicitly asked how to bypass my signature requirements and had paid a bribe to process the loans without my physical presence.
My mother burst into tears at the defense table, while my father covered his face with his hands.
