Chapter 3 - The Golden Boy’s Secret

"Mia, wait!"
Chloe ran up behind me as I walked toward the campus administration building. Her eyes were wide with shock. "Oh my god, Mia! Is all of that real? The loans? The identity theft?"
"Every single word," I said, adjusting the strap of my bag. "I’ve been working with a pro-bono fraud investigator for six months. I just needed to graduate first so they couldn't try to pull me out of school."
Before Chloe could answer, heavy footsteps stomped down the brick walkway. Ethan came running up, his tie crooked and his face distorted with rage.
"You ruined everything!" Ethan yelled, grabbing my shoulder. "Do you have any idea what you just did? Dad’s business partners were in that crowd!"
Before he could pull me around, Chloe shoved him back hard. "Touch her again and I'll have security take you down!"
I turned slowly to face my brother. The boy who had spent his entire life getting everything handed to him on a silver platter while I was left with the scraps.
"I didn't ruin your life, Ethan," I said coldly. "You and Dad did that yourselves when you decided my future was disposable."
"It was just money!" Ethan spat. "Dad was going to pay it back once my startup took off!"
"Your startup?" I laughed, a bitter, sharp sound. "You mean the fake LLC you created to pretend you were a CEO while spending Dad's embezzled money on sports cars and trips to Vegas?"
Ethan froze. The color completely drained from his cheeks. He hadn't realized I knew about the shell company.
"I didn't just report the identity theft to the university, Ethan," I stepped closer, lowering my voice so only he could hear. "I submitted the full file to the State Attorney General’s Fraud Division twenty minutes ago."

Ethan’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. Panic finally replaced his arrogance.
Just then, my father’s voice boomed from the end of the corridor. "Mia!"
