Chapter 4 - The Line in the Sand

My father marched down the hallway, his face dark with fury, flanked by my crying mother. The university security had let them go after escorting them off the main stage area, but they clearly hadn't learned their lesson.

"You are coming home right now," my father growled, grabbing my arm with a crushing grip. "You’re going to issue a public apology and tell everyone you made up those delusional lies!"

"Let go of her."

A deep, commanding voice cut through the corridor. A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit walked out from the administration office. It was Marcus Vance—one of the city’s top corporate litigation attorneys and a distinguished alumnus of the university.

My father sneered, not releasing his grip. "Mind your own business. This is a family matter."

"It stopped being a family matter the moment you committed federal felony identity theft against a student on this campus," Mr. Vance said smoothly, stepping between us. He calmly placed his hand on my father’s wrist and applied just enough pressure until my father was forced to let go.

"Who the hell are you?" my father demanded.

"I am Mia’s legal counsel," Mr. Vance replied, handing my father a formal document. "And you have officially been served with a emergency restraining order and a freeze notice on all accounts associated with the estate of Evelyn Ward."

My mother let out a sharp gasp. "Evelyn? That’s... that’s my mother’s estate! That was settled years ago!"

"It wasn't settled," I said, looking my mother straight in the eye. "Grandma left her house and trust fund directly to me in her original will. You and Dad hid the real will and forged a codicil to take it for yourselves."

"You... you can't prove that!" my mother stuttered, clutching her designer handbag tightly to her chest.

"We already did," Mr. Vance stated calmly. "The original handwriting analyst signed off this morning. I strongly suggest you hire a criminal defense attorney immediately, Mr. Ward. Because by Monday morning, law enforcement will be knocking on your door."

My father stood frozen in the quiet hallway, realization finally setting in that his power over me was completely gone.
