Chapter 12 - A Mother's Shield, A Father's Sword

Chaos erupted in the shipping yard.

Blinded and disoriented, Richard’s guards stumbled backward, firing wildly into the dark. Alexander moved like a ghost through the smoke, closing the distance to the nearest mercenary with brutal efficiency. He struck the man’s jaw with a devastating right hook, disarming him instantly before turning his fury on the second guard.

At the same time, Clara—fueled by pure maternal adrenaline—used the sharp edge of a rusted bolt on the pier floor to furiously saw through the thick nylon ropes binding her wrists. With a sharp wrench, her hands broke free.

Without a second thought for her own safety, Clara threw herself over Lily, shielding the little girl’s body with her own as stray bullets splintered the wooden crates around them.

"Mommy!" Lily cried.

"I've got you, baby, I've got you," Clara whispered fiercely, pressing her face into her daughter's hair.

Alexander fought his way through the remaining guards, his knuckles bruised and bleeding, until only Richard remained standing. Terrified, Richard dropped his weapon, grabbed Clara by the arm, and pulled her roughly to the edge of the pier, pressing a heavy revolver directly beneath her chin.

"Stop right there, Alexander!" Richard screamed, spittle flying from his lips, his eyes wide with unhinged panic. "One more step, and I send her back to the ocean where she belongs!"

Alexander froze, his chest heaving. He looked at Clara. She didn't look afraid; she looked back at him with absolute love and trust.

"Do it, Richard," Alexander said softly, taking a slow, deliberate step forward. His voice was completely calm, carrying the terrifying certainty of death. "If she dies... you won't even live long enough to hit the water."

Before Richard could pull the trigger, Alexander lunged forward with inhuman speed, grabbing the barrel of the revolver and forcing it upward just as it discharged. The bullet slammed harmlessly into the night sky. With a brutal twist, Alexander disarmed his uncle, slamming him hard against the wooden railing of the pier.

Richard lost his footing, his legs kicking wildly over the dark, churning abyss of the Hudson River. For a split second, Alexander caught him by the lapel of his jacket, holding him suspended over the freezing water—mirroring the exact cruel fate Richard had inflicted upon Clara six years ago.

Alexander looked down into his uncle’s terrified eyes. Then, with a cold, expressionless shake of his head, he let go.

Richard plummeted into the dark water below, swallowed instantly by the roaring current.
