Chapter 6 - A Shadow in the Rain

Back at the subway station, the flickering fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting an eerie, sickly glow over the empty platform. The last train had departed an hour ago, leaving Clara and Lily alone in the cavernous underground terminal.

Suddenly, heavy, echoing footsteps clicked against the concrete stairs.

Clara stiffened, pulling Lily behind her. Out of the shadows emerged two large, imposing men dressed in black leather jackets, their faces shadowed by baseball caps. They weren't police officers, and they certainly weren't homeless travelers. They moved with coordinated, menacing precision.

"Well, look what we have here," the larger of the two men sneered, flashing a gold-toothed grin as he stepped closer. "The boss’s fiancĂ©e said she wanted these two run out of the city permanently. Looks like we get to have a little fun first."

Clara’s blood ran cold. She backed up until her spine hit the cold tiled wall, desperately searching for anything she could use to defend her daughter. "Stay away from us!" she shouted, her voice echoing off the curved ceiling. "I have nothing! Take my bag, take whatever you want, just leave my child alone!"

"The boss wants a message sent," the second thug muttered, pulling a heavy brass knuckle from his pocket and sliding it over his fingers with a sickening clack. "And the message is that trash doesn't belong in Manhattan."

The first thug lunged forward, grabbing Clara by the arm and yanking her away from Lily. Clara screamed, thrashing wildly, kicking and scratching, but she was no match for his sheer strength. Lily let out a terrified shriek, crying out for her mother as she curled into a ball on the filthy floor.

"Let her go!" Clara sobbed, tears blinding her eyes as the thug’s heavy hand rose to strike her.

Before the blow could land, the heavy iron security gates at the top of the subway stairs were violently ripped open with a deafening crash of metal.

Heavy, furious footsteps slammed down the concrete steps—not two feet, but a dozen. And leading them was a man whose silhouette commanded absolute, terrifying authority.

Alexander Sterling.

He wasn't wearing his suit jacket. His silk shirt was open at the collar, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing tightly coiled muscles strained to their absolute limit. His face was a mask of cold, unadulterated murder.

The two thugs froze, turning around just in time to see the billionaire descending upon them like an avenging angel of death.

"You touch her," Alexander spoke, his voice dropping to a horrifying, icy whisper that froze the air in the station, "and I will personally ensure your bodies are never found."
