Chapter 3 - The Penthouse Prisoner

The storm raging outside the Manhattan skyscraper mirrored the absolute tempest brewing within the walls of the penthouse suite. Thunder cracked overhead, casting jagged, violent shadows across the marble floors. Dr. Evans, a middle-aged physician with nervous, darting eyes and sweat beading on his forehead, stood nervously near the grand piano. He had arrived within twenty minutes, carrying his medical kit like a man marching to the gallows.

Alexander stood by the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, his broad shoulders tense beneath his tailored suit. He watched the rain lash against the glass, but his mind was trapped in the past. Six years. Six years of hell, of empty beds, of boardroom wars fought with cold, murderous detachment. And now, a little girl with his mother’s eyes and a heavy gold pocket watch had walked into his life, completely shattering the armor he had spent years forging.

In the adjacent private sitting room, Clara sat on the edge of a velvet chaise lounge. She looked entirely out of place amidst the multi-million-dollar modern art and crystal chandeliers. A team of personal housekeepers had been ordered by Alexander to bring her fresh, warm clothes, but Clara had refused the designer silks, opting instead for a simple, soft cashmere sweater and trousers.

Lily sat curled up in her lap, fast asleep, exhausted by the emotional whirlwind of the evening. Her small face was peaceful, her chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm. Clara gently stroked her curly hair, her heart hammering against her ribs.

She didn't know who Alexander Sterling was—not really. She only knew him by the whispered, terrified tones of the other maids in the lower-level quarters who spoke of him as the "Iron Duke of Wall Street," a man who destroyed corporate rivals without a second thought. Yet, when he had looked at her daughter, there was no coldness in his eyes. Only a raw, agonizing vulnerability that frightened Clara more than his anger.

The door to the sitting room clicked open, and Alexander stepped inside. The air in the room suddenly felt heavier. He moved with silent, predatory grace, his gaze immediately locking onto Lily before shifting up to meet Clara’s wide, terrified eyes.

"She’s sleeping," Clara whispered defensively, instinctively tightening her arms around her daughter. "Please... don't take her away from me."

Alexander stopped a few paces away. He didn't look like an almighty billionaire at this moment; he looked like a ghost who had finally found his way back to the light. He slowly lowered himself onto one knee, keeping a respectful distance so as not to startle the sleeping child.

"I am not going to take her from you, Clara," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a low, gentle timbre that he had never used with anyone else in his entire life. "If the test proves what I think it proves... I will give you both the world. But until then, you are staying right here."

"Here?" Clara’s breath hitched. "Mr. Sterling, we belong in the servants' quarters. If your fiancĂ©e—if Vanessa sees us—"

"Vanessa has no authority in this house," Alexander interrupted, a sudden flash of ice returning to his storm-gray eyes. "From this moment on, you are no longer a maid in my employ. You are guests in my home. Dr. Evans is drawing the samples right now. In a few hours, we will have the truth."

Clara swallowed hard, her mind racing. "And if the truth isn't what you want? If she isn't... whoever you think she is?"

Alexander leaned in slightly, his gaze piercing straight through her soul. "Then I will still protect you. Because the way that little girl moves, the way she holds herself, and the exact replica of my mother’s watch she carries... those are things money cannot buy and strangers cannot fake. Someone tried to erase you six years ago, Clara. I am going to find out who."

Before Clara could process the terrifying weight of his words, a sharp knock echoed at the door, followed by Dr. Evans stepping into the room, holding a sealed manila envelope. The physician looked pale, avoiding Alexander’s intense gaze as he cleared his throat.

"Mr. Sterling," Dr. Evans said, his voice trembling slightly. "The expedited laboratory analysis is complete. The genetic markers have been fully cross-referenced."

Alexander stood up slowly, towering over the doctor. The sheer aura of authority radiating from him made Dr. Evans flinch.

"Give it to me," Alexander commanded.
