Chapter 13 - The Awakening

Three days later. The sterile, quiet walls of the private VIP suite at Sterling Memorial Hospital felt peaceful compared to the violence of the docks.
Clara sat propped up against the pillows of the hospital bed, a soft white blanket draped over her lap. Her bruises were fading, replaced by the warmth of healing. Sitting right beside her on the edge of the mattress was Alexander. He looked exhausted, his tie discarded, his dark hair slightly messy, but his hand was securely locked around Claraâs fingers, as if letting go would make her vanish into smoke once more.
Lily was curled up asleep on the adjoining sofa, wrapped in a plush velvet quilt.
Clara turned her head, looking up at the man who had brought her back from the dead. A soft, tender smile touched her lips.
"You know," Clara whispered, her voice husky and sweet, "you haven't changed your suit in two days, Mr. Sterling."
Alexander let out a low, ragged chuckle, his thumb gently tracing the back of her hand. "Call me Alex," he murmured, leaning his forehead gently against hers. "You promised you would. Six years ago... you whispered it to me on the balcony of our home before everything was stolen from us."
Tears welled in Claraâs eyes, but they were tears of profound, healing relief. She raised her free hand and gently touched his cheek, tracing the familiar lines of his face.

"Alex," she whispered, her voice breaking with emotion. "We're home. Our family is finally whole."
Alexander closed his eyes, pressing a deep, passionate kiss into the palm of her hand. The nightmare was over. The shadows of the past had finally been burned away by the truth.
