Chapter 11 - Whispers in the Boardroom

The transition from executive assistant to Director of the Arthur Carter Integrity Fund was seamless, yet it brought a new set of challenges.
Within a month, the news of my appointment had sent shockwaves through the corporate elite. While the public celebrated my story as a triumph of justice over corruption, the old-guard board members of Vance Enterprises were far from pleased. To them, I was still an outsider—a former maid who had brought down two of the most powerful families in high society.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, I stood in the glass-walled conference room on the 40th floor, presenting the first quarterly audit report to the board of directors.
At the head of the table sat Daniel, looking imposing in a dark charcoal suit. To his left sat Lord Harrison Vance, Daniel’s grandfather and the founding patriarch of the dynasty. Lord Harrison was an eighty-year-old titan of industry with sharp blue eyes, a silver cane, and a reputation for being utterly ruthless. He had remained silent during the entire scandal, watching from his estate in Europe as his younger grandson, Julian, was hauled off to prison.
"As you can see from page fourteen," I explained, pointing to the digital screen displaying the transparent ledger, "by implementing real-time cryptographic tracking on all international accounts, we have completely eliminated the blind spots previously exploited by Sterling Logistics."
The board members nodded in murmured approval, impressed by the rigorous system.
Except Lord Harrison.
The old man tapped his silver cane sharply against the hardwood floor. Thump. Thump.
The room immediately fell dead quiet.
Lord Harrison slowly adjusted his gold-rimmed reading glasses and looked across the long table at me. "A impressive technical presentation, Miss Carter," he rasped, his voice sounding like dry gravel. "You are undeniably clever. But Vance Enterprises was built on blood, loyalty, and legacy—not just spreadsheets."
I kept my chin raised, holding the old man's intimidating gaze without flinching. "With respect, Lord Harrison, it was a lack of transparency and a blind reliance on 'legacy' that allowed forty million dollars to be stolen under your family's watch."
A few board members gasped softly at my audacity.
A cold, dangerous silence stretched across the room. Daniel leaned forward slightly, his eyes narrowing as he prepared to step in and defend me.
However, before Daniel could speak, Lord Harrison’s stern face cracked into a low, rumbling laugh. "Fierce. Unyielding. Just like Arthur was when he first pointed out our accounting errors twenty years ago."
The patriarch set his cane aside and rested his hands on the table. "You have your father's spine, girl. I appreciate someone who doesn't cower in my presence. But do not mistake my appreciation for weakness. The Vance family still has enemies who will use your past against this company."
"If anyone attempts to attack this company through Maya, they will answer to me directly, Grandfather," Daniel interjected smoothly, his tone leaving no room for debate.
Lord Harrison studied his eldest grandson for a long moment, noticing the fierce, protective aura Daniel projected around me. The old man nodded slowly, a knowing glint in his sharp eyes. "I see. The matter is settled, then. The board approves Miss Carter's oversight budget."
As the meeting adjourned and the board members filed out, I let out a soft sigh of relief, leaning against the edge of the conference table.
Daniel walked over to me, wrapping his arm around my waist from behind and pulling me gently against his chest. "You held your ground against the Old Lion. Most CEOs sweat when he taps that cane."
"I was terrified," I admitted, laughing softly as I turned in his arms to face him. "But I meant every word."
"I know you did. That's why he respects you," Daniel said, resting his forehead against mine. "And that's why I—"
Before he could finish his sentence, my personal phone rang from my blazer pocket.
I pulled it out and looked at the screen. It was an encrypted call from the State Penitentiary medical ward.
I answered and put it on speaker. "Maya Carter."
"Miss Carter..." a nurse's nervous voice came through the line. "I am calling regarding inmate Vanessa Sterling. She was admitted to the infirmary an hour ago after an altercation with another inmate."
Daniel’s grip on my waist tightened. "Is she attempting another trick?"
"No, sir," the nurse replied hesitantly. "She requested to speak to Miss Carter directly. She claims she has information regarding Julian's secondary hidden offshore account—a contingency fund he set up before his arrest. She says... she will only give the access codes to Maya in person."
I looked at Daniel, a strange feeling of foreboding settling over me. Vanessa was stripped of her power, her wealth, and her freedom. Why would she suddenly offer us Julian's final secret?
"It's a trap," Daniel said firmly to the phone. "We aren't interested."
May you like
"Wait, Daniel," I said softly, holding up a hand. I looked at the rain trickling down the glass windows of the skyscraper. "If Julian has a contingency fund, he could use it to pay off witnesses or buy his way out of a maximum-security sentence. We need to shut down every door."
I looked into Daniel's worried eyes. "I need to see her one last time."
