Chapter 8 - The Siege at the Penthouse

The complete darkness of the penthouse was instant and total.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass walls, the glittering skyline of the city provided a dim, ambient glow, casting long, eerie shadows across the open-plan living room. The quiet hum of the air conditioning died, replaced by the heavy, ominous silence of a dead building.
"Maya, stay behind me," Daniel ordered instantly, his voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper.
Before I could react, he reached into the side cabinet of his desk, pulled out a sleek black handgun, and racked the slide with a clean, metallic clack. The sight of the weapon made my breath catch in my throat, but seeing Daniel’s calm, practiced handling of it grounded my surging panic.
"Is it Vanessa?" I whispered, taking a step closer to his back, my eyes wide as I scanned the shadows.
"She’s desperate, and she has her father’s private security mercenaries at her disposal," Daniel replied, his eyes locked on the heavy double entrance doors of the penthouse. "They cut the primary power to disable the electronic locks and emergency elevator overrides. They’re coming up."
Suddenly, the red emergency backup lights along the floorboards flickered to life, bathing the vast room in a crimson haze.
Clack. Clack. Clack.
The sound of heavy tactical boots echoed down the private hallway outside the main entrance. Then came the harsh, buzzing hiss of a high-power plasma torch cutting through the heavy steel deadbolts of the penthouse doors. Sparks began showering through the door frame, illuminating the dark hallway in violent bursts of white light.
"They're burning through the reinforced lock," Daniel muttered. He grabbed my arm, his grip firm and reassuring. "We can't take them in the open. The private rooftop helipad has a separate backup generator and a secured panic room. We go now."
He led me briskly down the spiral staircase toward the rear service corridor that led up to the roof. As we reached the heavy steel stairwell door, a loud CRASH shattered the air behind us. The main penthouse doors had been kicked open.
"Search the floor! Find the girl and take Vance out!" a harsh, gravelly voice barked from the living room. "Miss Sterling wants them both—alive or dead!"
My heart hammered wildly against my ribs. Vanessa wasn't just trying to cover her tracks anymore; she had completely abandoned any illusion of sanity. She wanted blood.
Daniel pushed open the heavy stairwell door and ushered me inside. "Go up, Maya! Ten flights to the roof. Don't look back!"
We scrambled up the concrete stairs, our footsteps echoing loudly in the narrow shaft. Down below, I could hear the heavy thud of tactical boots entering the stairwell behind us, followed by the muffled pops of suppressed gunfire. Bullets whined against the concrete walls above our heads, showering us with fine plaster dust.
Daniel turned at the third-floor landing, leveled his firearm down the stairwell, and fired three rapid shots. Screams of pain echoed from below, followed by the heavy clatter of a body tumbling down the steps.
"Keep moving!" Daniel shouted, taking my hand and pulling me up the remaining flights.
We burst through the heavy roof access door, emerging into the cold, midnight air of the skyscraper's rooftop. The wind whipped my hair across my face as I stumbled onto the wide concrete helipad. In the center of the roof stood the glass dome of the executive lounge, housing the reinforced panic room.
Daniel rushed to the biometric keypad beside the panic room door, pressing his palm against the glass scanner. The device beeped twice in frustration—Power Low.
"Damn it," Daniel cursed under his breath. "The backup lines were tampered with too."
"Looking for a way out, Daniel?" a smooth, chilling voice purred from the darkness of the rooftop entrance.
I turned around, my blood running cold.
Vanessa Sterling stepped onto the helipad, dressed in a black leather trench coat, her hair pulled back tightly. Her face was pale, her eyes wide and unhinged, reflecting the red navigation lights of the roof. Flanking her were three armed men in unmarked black tactical gear, their assault rifles trained directly at Daniel’s chest.
"Vanessa," Daniel said coldly, stepping directly in front of me to block their line of sight. "You're adding terrorism and murder to your federal indictment. There is no escaping this."
"Indictment?" Vanessa laughed, a sharp, hysterical sound that was swallowed by the howling wind. "Do you think I care about a court trial, Daniel? The Sterling name is ruined! My father’s empire is collapsing because of her!"
She pointed a gloved finger at me, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated venom.

"You chose a worthless, trashy housemaid over me," Vanessa sneered, her voice cracking with rage. "You humiliated me in front of the entire world. But it ends tonight. The original ledger is ash. The paper trail is dead. And once the two of you fall off this roof in a tragic 'accident,' there won't be anyone left to testify."
She signaled to the head mercenary. "Kill him first. Leave the girl for me."
