Chapter 5 - The Gala Trap

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a glittering sea of gold leaf, crystal chandeliers, and high-fashion couture. Wealthy investors, media moguls, and political figures mingled under the soft glow of lights, sipping champagne while strings played classical arrangements in the background.
I stood near the edge of the mezzanine balcony overlooking the crowd, wearing a floor-length emerald green gown that Daniel had personally ordered for me to wear as his executive representative. The rich silk draped elegantly over my frame, masking the fierce knot of anxiety tightening in my stomach.
Down on the main floor, Daniel was surrounded by a circle of board members and international investors. He moved through the crowd with effortless authority, the undisputed heir to the Vance empire. Yet every few minutes, his eyes would sweep up toward the balcony, locking onto mine with a silent, reassuring check-in.
"Quite the transformation," a smooth, venomous voice whispered behind me.
I turned around slowly.
Vanessa Sterling stood three feet away, draped in an eye-watering ruby gown that practically screamed for attention. Beside her stood Julian Vance, holding two flutes of champagne, an arrogant smirk plastered across his face.
"Miss Sterling. Julian," I said calmly, smoothing my dress. "I didn't expect to see you here tonight, Vanessa. I assumed your security clearance at Vance events had been revoked."
Vanessa’s eyes flashed with pure fury, but she quickly forced a manicured smile. "My family owns twelve percent of Vance Enterprises, darling. A minor dispute with Daniel isn't enough to banish me from society."
"What my dear Vanessa means," Julian chimed in, stepping forward to hand her a glass, "is that truth always finds a way to the surface. Isn't that right, Maya? Or should I say... Maya Lin-Carter?"
Hearing my father’s full last name spoken aloud felt like a physical blow. I kept my chin held high, refusing to give them the satisfaction of seeing me flinch. "I don't know what games you're playing, Julian."
"Oh, it's no game," Vanessa sneered, stepping closer until she was inches away from my face. "In exactly ten minutes, Daniel will take the stage to deliver his keynote address. But before he speaks, the media screens behind him are scheduled to display a special tribute presentation." She leaned in closer, her breath smelling of expensive wine. "Except the presentation file has been swapped. Instead of charity work, every screen in this room will display your father's criminal record, along with proof that you used a fake identity to infiltrate Daniel's house and office."
My chest tightened. "You framed my father. You and Julian stolen millions from the company."
Julian laughed softly, a cold, mocking sound. "Who do you think the press will believe, little girl? An orphaned maid who snuck into a billionaire's estate under false pretenses, or the son of the founder and his noble fiancée?"
"Former fiancée," I corrected coldly.
Vanessa’s expression twisted into a glare. "By the end of tonight, Daniel will kick you to the curb, your reputation will be thoroughly destroyed, and you'll be spending the night in a police cell for corporate espionage. Enjoy your last five minutes of royalty, Maya."
With a dramatic spin of her red dress, Vanessa walked toward the VIP section near the stage, with Julian following closely behind.
My hands shook, but my brain went into overdrive. I had ten minutes.
Instead of panicking, I reached into my evening clutch bag. I pulled out my phone and plugged in a small, black USB device I had prepared earlier that afternoon—a portable reader containing a copied file from the hidden safe.
I had known Vanessa would try something at the Gala. She was arrogant, predictable, and obsessed with dramatic public humiliation. But she hadn't accounted for one thing: I was no longer defensive.
I rushed toward the technical booth located at the back of the mezzanine level, where a young audio-visual technician was monitoring the master presentation laptop.
"Excuse me," I said, stepping into the booth with an urgent, authoritative tone. "Mr. Vance asked me to update the master media slide for the keynote. There was a last-minute change to the financial sponsor slide."
The technician looked up, looking flustered. "Uh, I was told the file was already finalized by Mr. Julian's team—"
"Julian Vance doesn't run executive media operations; Daniel Vance does," I cut in, pulling out my official executive assistant badge and leaning in close. "If the wrong financial slides air tonight, Daniel will personally ensure you never work in media production in this city again. Do you want to take that risk?"
The young man paled, looking at my high-level badge and the emerald gown. He quickly stepped aside. "N-no, ma'am. Go ahead."
I plugged my drive into the main terminal. On the screen, I saw the file Julian’s team had uploaded: a folder titled “Maya_Carter_Expose.pdf” queued to play during the main presentation broadcast.
With steady fingers, I deleted their file and replaced it with my own compiled document—a high-resolution scan of the bank transfer logs, the offshore account details, and the forged signatures co-signed by Julian Vance and Sterling Logistics.
"Keep the stream locked until Daniel takes the microphone," I instructed the technician smoothly. "Don't touch it."
"Understood, ma'am."
I stepped out of the booth, my heart thumping wildly against my ribcage.
Down below, the fanfare chimed. The crowd applauded as Daniel Vance stepped onto the main stage, adjusting the microphone at the podium. He looked striking, powerful, and completely in command.
To the side of the stage, Vanessa and Julian stood shoulder-to-shoulder, holding their champagne glasses high, waiting eagerly for the screens to ignite and destroy my life.
Daniel raised his hand, bowing slightly to the applauding audience. "Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for joining us at the 15th Annual Vance Foundation Gala."
As Daniel spoke, the massive 30-foot LED screens behind him flickered to life.
Vanessa took a eager sip of her champagne, her eyes fixed on the screen, waiting to see my mugshot and criminal file broadcast to five hundred high-society guests.
Instead, the screen illuminated with a massive, crystal-clear document: STATEMENT OF ILLEGAL WIRE TRANSFERS – STERLING LOGISTICS & JULIAN VANCE.

The room went dead silent.
Vanessa froze, the champagne glass slipping from her fingers and shattering loudly onto the polished marble floor.
