Chapter 14 - Through the Flames

The air inside the executive suite had turned into a thick, toxic blanket of black smoke. Every breath felt like inhaling liquid fire. My vision flickered, edge-stained in darkness, as the roar of the inferno threatened to consume everything.

"MAYA!"

Through the curtain of orange fire, Daniel appeared like a titan defying death itself. He wore a wet coat wrapped tightly around his upper body, his white shirt stained with ash, his gray eyes blazing with a fierce, frantic desperation.

He didn't care about the burning ceiling tiles dropping around him or the heat melting the soles of his dress shoes. He smashed the reinforced glass partition of my inner office with a heavy steel fire axe, kicking the shattered frame open.

"Daniel..." I choked out, my voice barely a raspy whisper.

"I'm here, baby! I've got you!" Daniel roared.

He dropped to his knees on the burning floor, scooping my limp body into his strong arms. He draped his wet wool coat over my head and face, shielding me completely from the searing heat and falling debris.

With incredible strength, Daniel rose to his feet, holding me tightly against his chest. He turned around and charged back through the wall of flames toward the main elevator shaft, where emergency service technicians were prying open the doors.

"Get them out! Move!" a firefighter yelled, pulling us into the reinforced emergency elevator.

As the steel doors slid shut, sealing out the inferno, Daniel collapsed onto the floor of the elevator cabin, still keeping me locked firmly in his arms. He pulled the coat away from my face, his hands shaking uncontrollably as he cupped my smoke-stained cheeks.

"Maya... look at me. Breathe, Maya, please," he pleaded, his voice cracking with emotion I had never heard from him before.

I let out a ragged, trembling cough, gasping for the cool oxygen pouring from the firefighter's emergency mask. I reached up with a weak, soot-covered hand, touching his jaw. "You... you came back..."

"I will always come back for you," Daniel whispered fiercely, pressing his forehead against mine, his tears washing clean tracks through the ash on his face. "If I lost you tonight, there would be nothing left of me."

By the time the elevator reached the ground floor, team paramedics swarmed us. I was wrapped in a thermal blanket and given pure oxygen, while fire crews fought the blaze forty stories above.

Sitting in the back of the ambulance, holding a tight grip on Daniel’s hand, I pulled out the small black flash drive I had guarded in my pocket through the entire nightmare.

"The fire... it wasn't an accident, Daniel," I whispered, my voice returning slowly. "Someone set it to destroy the original system logs from twenty years ago. Vanessa lied to me at the prison. She tried to make me think your grandfather was behind my father's death."

Daniel’s eyes narrowed, a cold rage flickering beneath his concern. "My grandfather?"

"Yes," I said, handing him the flash drive. "She wanted me to tear your family apart out of revenge. But I found the real digital authorization stamp before the fire started. It wasn't Lord Harrison. It was Richard Sterling. He used a stolen security key from your late father to execute the hit on my dad and hide the embezzled funds."

Daniel took the flash drive, holding it like a loaded weapon. "Richard Sterling thought he could burn the evidence and murder you in the process. He just signed his own death warrant."

Within two hours, armed federal marshals raided the Sterling family mansion on the outskirts of the city. Richard Sterling was arrested while attempting to board a private jet to South America, charged with attempted murder, arson, and high treason against corporate federal laws.

The Sterling dynasty was completely destroyed, its web of lies burned to ash—leaving only the untainted truth behind.
