Chapter 7 - The Shadows Strike Back

The aftermath of the Gala was an absolute media supernova.

By the following morning, every major newspaper and financial news outlet featured the same front-page headline: "VANCE DYNASTY SHATTERED: FRAUD, ARRESTS, AND A DECADE-OLD COVER-UP EXPOSED."

Stock prices for Sterling Logistics plummeted by forty percent in a single morning, while Vance Enterprises initiated a complete internal restructure. Julian Vance and Vanessa Sterling were held without bail at the city precinct, facing dozens of federal charges that carried up to thirty years in prison.

I sat on the velvet sofa inside Daniel’s high-floor penthouse apartment, a warm mug of tea resting between my hands. The morning sun poured through the glass walls, illuminating the city skyline below. After the events at the Gala, Daniel had insisted I stay at his secure residence, citing concerns that remaining associates of the Sterling family might seek retaliation.

The heavy oak doors of the penthouse study opened, and Daniel walked out, wearing a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He looked exhausted, the dark circles under his eyes hinting at a sleepless night spent with lawyers and federal prosecutors, yet his presence was as commanding as ever.

He walked over and sat on the cushion beside me, taking a slow sip from his coffee.

"Julian’s legal team is already trying to strike a plea bargain," Daniel said, his tone grim. "He's offering to give up the names of every offshore broker involved in the embezzlement scheme in exchange for a reduced sentence."

"And Vanessa?" I asked quietly.

"Vanessa is refusing to cooperate," Daniel replied, a dark look crossing his face. "Her father, Richard Sterling, has hired the most expensive defense attorneys in the state. He's claiming Vanessa was manipulated by Julian and had no knowledge of the illegal transfers."

I set my mug down on the glass coffee table, my hands trembling slightly. "Her signature was on the documents, Daniel. She knew everything. She helped set up the shell accounts using her family's shipping manifests."

"I know," Daniel said gently. He reached out, placing his warm hand over mine. The simple touch sent a strange, comforting heat through my chest. "And I won't let her walk free, Maya. I promise you. Your father will get full justice."

I looked down at our joined hands. For seven years, my life had been driven entirely by grief, anger, and the cold desire for revenge. I had spent every waking moment fighting to clear my family's name, isolated from everyone. But looking at Daniel, feeling the solid, unshakable weight of his support, something inside me began to shift.

"Why did you protect me, Daniel?" I asked, looking up into his gray eyes. "When Vanessa planted that necklace in my bag at the mansion... you could have just let security handle it. You didn't know if I was dangerous."

"I knew who you were the moment you walked into the mansion six months ago," Daniel said softly, his thumb gently tracing the back of my hand. "I recognized your father's eyes in yours. I watched you work. I saw how proud, how disciplined, and how fiercely protective you were of your dignity. You didn't come into my home to steal or destroy. You came for the truth."

A soft, genuine smile touched my lips for the first time in years. "You watched me pretty closely for a billionaire boss."

"I couldn't help it," Daniel admitted, a rare, warm glint appearing in his eyes. "You were the only genuine person in a house filled with snakes."

Before I could reply, the secure landline on the side table began to ring sharply.

Daniel’s warm expression vanished instantly, replaced by his usual sharp vigilance. He picked up the receiver and pressed it to his ear. "Vance."

He listened silently for twenty seconds. As the caller spoke, I watched the color slowly drain from Daniel’s face. His grip on the receiver tightened until his knuckles turned ghostly white.

"Are you sure?" Daniel asked, his voice chillingly low.

He listened for another moment, then slowly set the phone back on its base.

"What happened?" I asked, a knot of dread tightening in my stomach. "Is it Julian?"

Daniel turned to face me, his jaw clenching tightly. "Richard Sterling just posted a fifty-million-dollar cash bail for Vanessa. She was released from custody twenty minutes ago."

My blood ran cold. "She's out?"

"It gets worse," Daniel said, looking directly into my eyes. "The transport vehicle carrying the physical master ledger—the original paper documents you recovered from my safe—was ambushed on its way to the federal courthouse ten minutes ago. The evidence locker was burned. The original files are gone."

I stood up from the sofa, panic surging through my veins. "Gone?! How could they know which route the transport was taking?!"

"Because someone on the inside leaked it," Daniel said, standing up beside me, his eyes blazing with a dangerous light. "Vanessa didn't just buy her freedom, Maya. She and her father are wiping the slate clean. And now that she's out... she has nothing left to lose."

Suddenly, the lights inside the penthouse flickered once, twice, and completely went black.

The primary power to the building had been cut.
