Chapter 6 - Public Execution

The sharp, high-pitched shatter of Vanessa’s champagne glass against the marble floor echoed through the dead-silent ballroom.
Nobody looked at her. Every pair of eyes in the venue—from billionaires and news reporters to city council members—was glued to the thirty-foot LED screens towering behind Daniel Vance.
The document displayed was irrefutable. In crisp, zoomed-in detail, the screens showed offshore bank account routing numbers, wire transfer receipts totaling over forty million dollars, and two distinct, digitized signatures side-by-side at the bottom: Julian Vance and Sterling Logistics. Beneath the signatures sat a secondary document—an internal audit report proving that the funds had been systematically stolen from Vance Enterprises' charitable foundation over a seven-year period.
A collective, deafening gasp erupted from the five hundred assembled guests. Camera flashes began going off in rapid, blinding succession as journalists immediately recognized the story of the decade.
On stage, Daniel paused mid-sentence. He slowly turned around, looking up at the massive projection behind him. His sharp gray eyes scanned the financial figures, the signatures, and the offshore routing codes. A dark, terrifying stillness settled over his features.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Julian screamed from the VIP section, his face turning a mottled, furious red. He broke away from the crowd and rushed toward the technical booth mezzanine, his eyes frantically searching the upper balcony. "Turn those screens off! Cut the feed right now!"
"Don't touch the controls!" Daniel’s voice boomed through the ballroom’s sound system, amplified and thunderous.
The room fell instant silent again. Daniel turned back to face the audience, his expression carved out of solid marble. He didn't panic. He didn't look confused. He looked like an apex predator that had finally spotted its prey.
"Security," Daniel commanded smoothly into the microphone. "Lock all exits. No one leaves this room."
Uniformed guards instantly stationed themselves at the grand double doors of the Plaza Hotel, sealing the ballroom shut.
Vanessa stood frozen in place among the crowd, her ruby gown making her look like a splash of blood on the white floor. The smug, sadistic grin she had worn just minutes ago was completely gone, replaced by a expression of hollow, terror-filled disbelief.
"Julian..." Vanessa whimpered, her voice trembling as guests around her began pulling away, leaving her isolated in the center of the room. "Julian, do something! What is that on the screen?!"
Julian didn't answer her. His eyes swept across the mezzanine balcony until they locked directly onto me. I stood near the marble railing in my emerald gown, my expression calm, composed, and unyielding.
Julian’s jaw tightened in realization. "You..." he spat under his breath. "It was you."
"Julian Vance. Vanessa Sterling," Daniel said, stepping down from the stage and walking slowly into the center of the ballroom. The crowd parted instantly to create a path for him. "Would either of you like to explain why forty million dollars meant for the Vance Children’s Hospital was redirected into shell accounts registered under your names in Grand Cayman?"
"It's a fake!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking as she pointed a trembling finger toward the mezzanine. "It's a setup! That girl—your assistant—she hacked the system! She's a criminal! Her father was an embezzler who died running from the law! She’s trying to ruin my family!"
Daniel stopped in front of Vanessa, his tall frame casting a long shadow over her. "Her name is Maya Carter," Daniel stated, his voice ringing loud and clear across the room. "And her father, Arthur Carter, was the chief auditor of Vance Enterprises who was murdered seven years ago because he discovered this exact paper trail."
My breath caught in my throat. I stared down at Daniel from the balcony.
He knew.
He knew my real name. He knew who my father was.
"You... you knew?" Vanessa stuttered, stumbling back a step.
"I’ve known since the day Maya applied for the housekeeping position," Daniel revealed coldly. "I knew her father was framed. What I lacked was the master ledger containing the direct signatures of the co-conspirators—the ledger my brother hid in my private office safe, thinking I would never look behind my own bookshelf."
Daniel looked up at the balcony, meeting my eyes with a look of profound, unwavering respect. "Maya found what my security team missed. She brought the truth to light."
Before Julian could attempt to flee through a side service door, two plainclothes detectives stepped out from the shadows of the hallway and slammed him against the wall, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
"Julian Vance, you are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, and corporate embezzlement," one of the officers announced loudly.
"Get your hands off me!" Julian roared, thrashing against the officers as the flashbulbs blinded him. "Daniel! You can't do this to your own brother! Dad will destroy you for this!"
"Father was the one who signed the arrest warrant two hours ago," Daniel replied coldly, without a hint of pity.
As two more officers approached Vanessa, she let out a hysterical scream, dropping to her knees on the shattered glass of her champagne flute. "No! I'm a Sterling! You can't arrest me! Daniel, please! Tell them it's a mistake!"
"Take her away," Daniel ordered flatly, turning his back on her.
The crowd watched in awe and scandal as the heiress of Sterling Logistics and the younger son of the Vance dynasty were dragged out of the Plaza Hotel in handcuffs, surrounded by a frenzy of news cameras.
The ballroom descended into chaotic chatter. Daniel turned away from the press, bypassed the board members trying to ask him questions, and walked directly toward the grand staircase leading to the mezzanine balcony.
He stopped right in front of me. The air between us felt charged, thick with unspoken emotions.

"You knew who I was all along?" I asked softly, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Why didn't you turn me away? Why did you keep me near you?"
Daniel reached out, his long fingers gently catching my hand. "Because your father was an honorable man, Maya," he said quietly, his voice meant only for me. "And I needed to make sure his daughter was safe while I finished what he started."
