Chapter 2 - The File Called AVA BREAKDOWN

The next morning, Dad canceled every meeting on his calendar.

He stayed.

That mattered more than I could explain.

My attorney, Rachel Sloan, arrived before nine.

So did a forensic accountant named Ethan Price.

Rachel reviewed the conservatorship petition.

“This is sophisticated.”

“Meaning?”

“Someone has been preparing it for months.”

The medical records listed a psychiatrist named Dr. Malcolm Reed.

I had never met him.

According to the documents, I had.

Seven times.

The notes described paranoia.

Impulsive spending.

Alcohol misuse.

Delusions about marital abuse.

That last one made me physically sick.

They had anticipated the possibility that I would tell someone Ryan hit me.

And prepared records describing those allegations as delusions.

“How do we prove they're fake?”

Rachel looked at me.

“We don't need to prove anything immediately. They need to prove they're real.”

Dad leaned forward.

“But find out.”

Ethan began tracing money.

Rachel contacted Dr. Reed's clinic.

Then she received a call.

Dr. Reed existed.

He remembered my name.

Not because he treated me.

Because Patricia had contacted him.

She claimed to be helping her mentally ill daughter-in-law.

She asked whether he would perform a retrospective evaluation using family observations.

He refused.

His signature on the report was forged.

That gave police another problem for Patricia.

Then Ethan found payments.

Ryan had transferred $85,000 to a company called Meridian Family Advocacy.

The company had prepared background materials supporting the conservatorship petition.

“Who owns it?” I asked.

Ethan turned his laptop.

A woman named Nicole Grant.

I knew the name.

Ryan's college girlfriend.

He told me they hadn't spoken in fifteen years.

They had spoken forty-three times in the previous six months.

The financial plan was becoming clear.

If Ryan obtained control over me through a conservatorship, he could potentially influence accounts and trust distributions.

But there was still a problem.

Dad had structured my largest inheritance inside protections Ryan couldn't easily penetrate.

Dad smiled when Rachel explained it.

“That's why Patricia needed Ava declared incapacitated.”

Exactly.

Marriage wasn't enough.

They needed legal control.

Then Ethan opened another folder from the USB.

Its title:

AVA BREAKDOWN.

Inside was a schedule.

Week 1: increase pressure.

Week 2: document emotional reaction.

Week 3: isolate from father.

Week 4: birthday incident.

Birthday incident.

My stomach dropped.

“They planned my birthday?”

Rachel read further.

Create public confrontation.

Record instability.

Witnesses present.

Ensure Thomas not present.

Dad looked at me.

“They didn't expect me.”

“No.”

His delayed flight hadn't ruined the evening.

His arrival had ruined their plan.

Ryan intended to provoke me publicly.

Maybe humiliate me.

Maybe make me scream.

Then his friends would become witnesses.

Instead, Dad walked through the door.

And Ryan, arrogant enough to believe everyone would laugh, admitted the abuse himself.

“I slapped her instead of saying happy birthday.”

The sentence he thought made him powerful had become evidence.
